Description

Here I have for sale my much loved MR2. I saved this car from the scrapheap back in 2012, buying it from the previous owner when he was about to trade it in for something new. Since then it has been my second car/project and has had plenty of work done to it to bring it back to life. Sadly, house purchases and life in general mean its now sadly a bit surplus to requirements. I don’t have the time to spend on it any more, and feel that someone with a bit more time than me and a bit more expertise in bodywork repairs could have an outstanding example of this future classic for very little outlay of their time.
It is a 1992 J Reg UK car in Zircon Blue (a colour rarely seen) in 2.0 16V GT trim with a T Bar roof (with original storage bags!!) With only 92k miles on the clock its also well under the average mileage and as such is in good mechanical condition. It drives straight and true, with no unwanted clunks or bangs, has never been in an accident (as the clear HPI check will prove) and is actually very comfortable on a long journey. The interior, finished in black leather, is clean and tidy with no rips or tears in any leather and benefits from leather conditioning every year to keep it soft. The carpet is undamaged and the vehicle has the genuine MR2 mats in it. The boot is quite big considering the engine is back there, easily swallowing a few bags for a weekend trip. The spare wheel and toolkit are all still present up front.
Since April 2012 when I bought the car from its only other owner (thats right, 2 including me!) I have replaced and upgraded the car as follows: Upon purchase and inspection I carried out an engine & gearbox removal and replacement of the following: Crankshaft oil seals front and rear, rocker cover gasket (oil leak on to alternator), camshaft oil seals, diff seals, coolant and oil changes, gearbox oil change Replacement clutch, pressure plate and release bearing Replacement alternator (genuine Toyota item) New toyota genuine cam belt and tensioner Mongoose slash cut stainless exhaust 4 new Falken tyres, covered about 3,000 miles at most! Powder coated wheels and strut brace Rear anti roll bar drop links Since then I have added: New distributor cap, rotor arm, HT leads and spark plugs. aftermarket alarm and immobiliser White LED dash lights OMP Steering wheel and boss MOMO Chrome gear knob New Genuine Toyota head gasket (for a minor external oil leak) Stainless manifold and downpipe, custom made to fit the car Induction kit, Black Diamond grooved brake discs front and rear, with Brembo pads Goodridge braided brake hoses front and rear with full brake fluid change, Pioneer Single DIN headunit with USB, SD card and Bluetooth capabilities, Short throw gear lever Complete O/S sill New Varta battery I have also stripped and rebuilt the brake callipers, including painting in heatproof black paint and had the drivers seat leather repaired on the bolster where they usually wear! I have a box file full of receipts, MoT’s, repair invoices and even the original service book (full of Toyota stamps) and wallet!!
However, as mentioned earlier it is in need of a bit of bodywork attention. It has a few touch ups in the wrong colour on the bonnet from the previous owner, only stone chips but noticeable when looking over it. The drivers door has a little rust at the bottom, on the leading edge and the rear edge. I had these filled when I first had the car but never got round to doing anything more. Somehow, someone has put a slight bend in the engine cover lid as if something was dropped on it, it still works fine just looks a bit tatty. The slight bend is around 2-3 inches in length around halfway up the lid. The spoiler has some small paint bubbling appearing on it where rainwater has sat on it. There is also slight kerb damage to two wheels (NS) which I have touched up, and various marks that are consistent with a car of this age. Underneath and for MOT purposes, some welding will be needed to the rear of the vehicle to correct some corrosion. The OS sill was replaced last year and the NS sill will soon need the same treatment. The rest of the underneath of the car is undersealed. For a large part of its life with me it was stored in a locked garage, and the previous owner appears to have mostly garaged it, only recently has it spent a little more time outside but its rarely if ever been driven in the rain by me. Other niggly things which I feel I must mention include the under trays, most of the screws and bolts have snapped meaning they are in the boot at present, I have just never got round to drilling out the holes and repairing them. The storage box beneath the stereo doesn’t fit quite right, it works but is a little loose with gaps either side. The short shift means a smaller gear knob and gaitor need to be sourced but again, I haven’t had the time. The aerial has died and doesn’t come up anymore, this seems common but I just use the iPlayer app and a USB lead and it works just the same, I was going to remove the aerial and have the hole filled but again, time and money mean this is just on a list! Some of these things may have been remedied by the time its sold but they really are minor.
All in all this is a great car, it sounds great, looks the part and is a real head turner, particularly on a nice sunny day with the roof off! A little bit of bodywork attention and its perfect. Im sad I haven’t had the time but I would be happy to see it go to someone who is going to finish it off nicely. It qualifies for classic car insurance too, which makes it about £100 a year to insure! A good looking future classic which I’m sure in a few years time will only gain value if looked after nicely. I would urge any prospective buyer to come and view for themselves what a gem this is, and that with the right care and work it can be a show standard car for sure.
