A sprinkling of RICE

Post by midshipmad » 01/09/17 9:01

Hi All,
So i'm probably going to get flamed for posting this but i'm ok with that. Hopefully someone can help out with my issue.

I've just bought a launch control setup with clutch switch for flat shifting and looking to wire up a switch to turn it on / off. I was thinking of using the ash tray space as i don't really use it for anything other than holding a lot of random screws that should go back in my car somewhere.

I was thinking of wiring up push button start as well and do away with my key. I understand i would lose some security blah blah blah but i have remote immobiliser and take my steering wheel off when i leave the car for long times anyways.

So this is what i was looking at adding:

Does anyone have any experience with these?

Not quite sure how you would come off at MOT time without the steering lock
http://www.ukmot.com/manual/2.1/Steering-Control
Sure Gazrev1tubby worked on an electronic lock for it.
Remember if it is in the ashtray position you will need to remove it everytime you change stereo

Good point!
So i have re-evaluated, thinking i might have to go to single din head unit and then panel above / below.
Sadly just bought double din so need to work that out :-(

Remove one or both of the centre vents or drivers side vent and put it there maybe, or switches by the gear lever perhaps?
You could still have ignition key and lock, turn to ignition then press button start instead of key start.

I have one of those hondaesq type round push button starts. It is fitted in the cig lighter position. I still have to turn ignition on with key then hit the button. I can also just use the key

madbassshunter has missed a trick. :) I have underlined the relevant bit.
Linked document wrote: The inspection of the steering lock only applies to passenger cars with:

a steering lock fitted as standard by the manufacturer, and four or more wheels, and not more than 8 passenger seats excluding the drivers seat, and first used on or after 1 September 2001
Every limb of the above must be satisfied for an inspection to apply. That 'and' is crucial because it means it won't apply to any Mk1 or Mk2: only a Mk3.

It is also a good idea never to rely on an unofficial site. The one madbasshunter has used states:
Reproduced from the MOT Inspection Manual by kind permission of THE VEHICLE INSPECTORATE
There is no such organisation. The governing body is the DVSA. Always link to the official source document: it will be the most accurate and up-to-date one. See Section 2.1 page 2 Issue date: May 2014 - https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... -and-7.pdf -

Another example of why you should use the official document as the source.
Linked document wrote: It is acceptable for a steering lock to be removed if it has been replaced with another immobilisation device.
The actual MOT Inspection Manual is subtly different and more comprehensive.*
The MOT Inspection Manual wrote: It is acceptable for a steering lock to be missing or inoperative provided the vehicle has an engine immobiliser, or permanently installed immobilisation device which acts on either the steering, brakes or the transmission.
* i.e. 'missing or inoperative' rather than 'removed'. No mention of 'replaced with' at all.
Where compliance issues are involved the specific wording is of crucial importance.

See above. Print out a copy of Section 2.1 page 2 in case you get any grief from a tester. Better still find one who understands the nuances like those of us who have 3S-GTEs under the lid need to. Image

think about quickly reaching it, say in the event of a stall.

So at the moment i'm thinking of having it in where the ash tray goes now so it's easy reach, launch control will go in right hand fan vent hole
