A sad story

Post by andy hunt » 06/08/19 14:10

A few years ago I sold my gorgeous Y reg MR2 Roadster to my son. The problems started when he took it into a local garage for a service, suffice to say it has an engine problem on a replacement engine. Our mechanic says it has a piston problem and clearly my son, having already replaced the engine after the garage's likely negligence feels it is uneconomic to work on it further. But neither of us want to scrap it and I said I would try this approach on this site while he is on holiday to seek any ideas. Clearly we hope an enthusiast might be keen to take it on. It has a separate hard top with its own trolley and cover. We will put full detail on the Classifieds on his return, but in the meantime a few photos are attached to show what a lovely motor it still is.I hope Admin are OK with this approach.

Not really sure whether you are wanting to sell it or have someone help you fix it?

If you are swapping an engine on a Roadster, you are best to try and find one of the very last engines that have had the final update of the 1zz engine by Toyota that seems to have worked so far. If you need to source one, best to speak to people like Dick Sloan of Mr2 Roadster Recycling in Carlisle (dick2ski I think on here) or ne of the other recyclers further south if you are nowhere near Dick.

If you are trying to sell it, do you not have to put up a price and put it in the for sale section?

Personally, if you have the time and space, I'd source an engine from a face-lift model that had the additional lube holes in the pistons and swap out. You're right that's too good to scrap!

Thank you all for your responses on this. It is a real dilemma for us. We dont want to scrap it and my current thinking is that I might buy it back off my son and get it repaired. I have made enquiries with a local classic car repair specialist who may be prepared to take it on. Thank you so much for thoughts on a further replacement engine if that is what is needed. Hope you dont mind if I come back to you for further information if needed
