New MR2 News and Rumours

Post by MR2Jay » 17/09/19 15:51

Being a site dedicated to the MR2 and given the latest rumblings from Toyota themselves, It might be worth keeping a thread going with any news we come across (including pics) regarding a possible return of our model.

I for one am a little intrigued by what I am hearing and reading :th:

For example, the latest concept images are exciting, well they are in my mind :th: It looks like Toyota MIGHT be following a pattern with the MK3 being a re-imagining of the MK1 (loosely - granted although it shares far more design cues with the MK1 than the MK2). The new concept looks more of a re-invention of the MK2

I'm also intrigued by the thought that Toyota would like to work with Porsche on this project, following the Toyota/Subaru partnership for the GT86 and Toyota/BMW partnership with the new Supra.....

So, let's discuss.....

Thoughts?

This is true

That said, there are a lot of rumblings and teasers coming from Toyota themselves, which is generally a good sign :th:

I am curious however to see if there are any nice surprises at the Tokyo Motor Show next month :cool1:

With the GT86 already in production and the Supra pending dont you think the MR2 MK4 needs to be something really radical or there is no point ? Put it at a price point that there is nothing else to compete with and I'm talking higher not lower they made that mistake with the MK3. Porsche would be a great partner.

Much as I would love to see a mk4, having seen how long the Supra took to become a reality I am not holding my breath. There have been plenty of concepts over the years talked about as a new MR2 but I imagine Toyota are struggling to find a way to make it pay. They have got criticism over their partnerships when they were doing the 86 and the Supra but the partnerships are necessary to be able to build the cars.

I would be happy with a porsche partnership and I believe they have history together on the mk1 boxster.

I hope though that they look to the alpine for inspiration- light weight is vital to my mind if it is to find a place in the market.

I agree they have had some amazing cars proposed but nothing has happened. Arguably its too late now as pretty much everything is considering the Electric Hybrid option and the days of pure grunt from a combustion engine are dwindling with lower and lower emissions required and smaller and smaller engines. We are at a bit of a crossroads in evolution and they have yet to get really serious about and electric sports car that is even close to being affordable. The rise of the SUV over here has resulted in things going in the wrong direction with boxes on wheels, the chances of some amazing sports car from Toyota has never been less likely to actually make production.

Yeah like I said......they would be looking at Electric so its stuffed already before it even gets off the drawing board.

Reality is that things have moved on, you can get a sedan now thats quicker in every way than the MR2 was 30 years ago.

Toyota really need to go radical or don't bother at all, plenty of other cars to choose from now. Please don't make another MX5, create a market segment with something new that can also just be driven to the track and raced in a Toyota class like the Formula Toyota. Its going to need some sort of unique appeal.

Price point ? bad news for most people here, it needs to be at about NZ$100,000 so below the Porsche entry point but with 911 performance.
