Top garage for Mint Mk1 service after 15 years storage?

Post by red5 »

I'd be very grateful for any recommendations for top MR2 specialist service/repair garages (Herts/M25 area ideal) who I could entrust a cherished mint 1989 MK1 to.

Car is in almost "as new" condition throughout (have owned it the past 30 years) and has been in the garage for many years.

Want someone who really knows their Mk1s to do a full restore of new fluids, filters, belts etc. before taking it out on the road again. Imagine it will need fuel tank drain, brake fluid bleed, new engine oil, possibly new gearbox oil also?

If you have personally had a good experience using any shop or mechanic that really know their stuff that would be even better - feel free to email/message me if preferred.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi, you're in the same area as me. It's very rare to see another MK1 around Hertfordshire.

I take my MK1 to Patrick chambers in Bexhill, it's a fairly long drive but he's well regarded on here and looks after quite a few members cars.

Really hope it was not stored with old oil in it and it was at least run now and again. The valve springs dont like to be compressed and not moved for years or they can break if you try and run it. Cars really like to be run now and again to circulate the fluids. The MK1 is getting pretty rare over here now and fetch good prices.

Many thanks for the tip angpozzuto and jimi.

Having taken a look at the map, that is quite far and we would need to pay for a transport to get the car there. The fuel gauge showed a brief orange light on start up then zero - and has not responded to 30 litres of new fuel going in. Battery new and all else good/everything works (cranks/turns) but no getting fuel in - when tested with injecting starter fluid directly engine fires just fine.

So, I am thinking fuel has gone off and sludge has blocked the fuel pump?

Given that, any tips for specialists nearer the St Albans/Hemel/Watford area. Given how mint the car is and how important this "service" will be I do want someone good (who I can also hopefully go back to easily if needed).

Once again, many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Am afraid I did not drain all the oil out. Hence hoping for a good specialist who can help prep everything properly.

All these years, and even after buying lots of different and more "exotic" cars, the Mk1 MR2 was always such a superb/fun drive, great steering, handling and feel (all the while also being so comfortable and with a great driving position). Never once thought of selling and nice to see some proper appreciation growing for what is a fabulous little sports car.

Just amazing cars and the only real disappointment for me is that Toyota never kept improving it after the MK2 and then dropped it out of the lineup.

That's super helpful - many thanks.

If we go this route just hope we tie the straps correctly - don't want it falling off!

If I'm not driving the car to Patrick's I usually arrange for it to be transported using Shipley.
