MR2OC Way Of The Roses Macmillan Cycle Challenge - May 2017

Post by MR2Jay »

Good Morning and welcome to the "Official" MR2OC "Way Of The Roses" Cycle Challenge thread in order to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support :th:

All too often, our lives are touched by people who do whatever they can to make lives better despite them not knowing anything about you. My life has been effected by these people and personally, I would like to give back. This was the thinking behind this little project. The time they spent, not only with my Grandmother in her final months but also my family will never be forgotten :th:

To this end, we have a team of us tackling the "Way Of The Roses" cycle route, from the west coast at Morecombe, right across the country to the east coast at Bridlington which is roughly 170 miles coast to coast. Chances are, we'll be taking a slightly longer route to ensure that road bikes can handle it OK and we'll be stopping overnight to recharge.

http://wayoftheroses.info/route

The team we have together so far consists of....

1. MR2Jay
2. MR2TurboTom
3. Vinp182
4. BaileyDom
5. JCurtis
6. Dave (Vinny's Mate)
7. AndyAyres (Possible)
8. Gazza_DJ (Possible)
9. AlanWheeldon
10. Pbmr2

The challenge will include an overnight stay at **to be arranged** and will take place on 27th/28th May 2017 allowing plenty of time to get training in. I'll be posting updates on my training to this thread, I don't know if anyone will follow suit

The target is a very achievable £2,500, which will be raised through Just Giving. The donation page for anyone wanting to pledge money to this cause is

https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/MR2OC

I'll keep this thread updated with progress, both with our target figure and the event itself, with chat and ideas coming through here. This is the first time I have attempted a challenge like this :th:

The first post will be updated when necessary to reflect the plans....Please show your support for this challenge :th:

As suggested by TLF?

Liking the idea to be honest.....Good carvery to recharge with, reasonable prices (£45 for an En-Suite single) with breakfast and close to the main route?

Looks good. More importantly it has a bar - i think a pint will be in order after those hills.

On the subject of bikes, I'm considering the b'twin triban 500 but could be tempted by the slightly older triban 3 as well (both off ebay/gumtree etc) Any thoughts?

Both seem really good bikes for the money, the Triban 3 being slightly lighter but the 500 looking more "up to date" so to speak. :th:

Reading the reviews, everyone seems to rave about them. I would look at new handlebar tape on a used bike and also watch the gears. I know my cheap and cheerful has a few adjustment issues I have to iron out.

How much used out of interest? Reason I ask is they aren't that expensive new :th:

Save about a hundred quid on the new price. Yeah the reviews seem to love them

The only down side is not being able to get used to the bike..... That and they probably weigh the same as a planet :laughing

I've found that it's taken a few sessions out on mine to get used to go how it feels and understand the gearing properly if I'm honest

**edit - just seen they have a custom built carbon bike for hire at £35**

Left a bit earlier this morning and rode the Felt to the station rather than driving. Rather than taking the direct route (which is about 3 miles), decided to go around the houses, taking it up to about 5 miles. I know it isn't much, but at 5.30am it's plenty. Planning to take it out for a long run on Saturday if my emergency toolkit arrives :th:

I have to admit, I was dubious when I bought it how much I would actually use it but I'm getting quite fond of taking that one out. Any chance of loose stuff and I'll use the Kona but on the road, the Felt wins hands down :th:

Well, we've had our first donations, getting us off the mark :yh:

If everyone involved can spread this link to raise money for this cause, I'd appreciate it. If we keep it all on the same page, we know exactly where we are :th: If we beat the target? All the better :yh:

https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/MR2OC

I'm going to post updates to this page, keeping those supporting us in the loop so if anyone has any relevant photo's (new equipment, photo's from a ride out etc) that I can post on this, I can paint a picture of our progress for everyone :th:
