Plan of attack - MK2 Bodywork opinions

Post by MR2Jay »

Morning folks,

I'd like to ask your opinion of something.

My MK2 SERIOUSLY needs a respray, the red is not a patch on what it once was. While I am doing this, I am taking advantage of the fact that it needs the work to make a few modifications to the styling. Now, most of these parts I can get all of the prep work done off the car, leaving just the final fitting to do before the paint. I've test fitted and tweaked everything already so I know they are good.

Now, I'm enjoying driving her at the moment, she certainly makes me smile. Once it is in for paint, then I can't enjoy her over the summer.....

Should I get Yakushi over and done with in September, take my time and get everything properly sorted ready for paint and take her in at the end of September accepting that she won't be top drawer for this year but spot on for next or should I make a push to get the prep work done and it in for paint beforehand and hope it is back and finished before Yakushi?

Thoughts?

Painting sounds like a early 2020 job for someone else to me!

Oh, it'll be going into a shop for sure.....Prior to that, I'll be fettling, smoothing and prepping all the new parts to go on :th:

Then spend an afternoon swapping them over before it goes into paint as a complete car :th:

if you are going to the trouble of full respray, now is the time to check (double check) sills, inner sills, door skins etc. you dont want tine worm showing within 10 years of full respray

Yup, was planning on going over it. Went over the underside properly on the last MoT and there isn't any hint of anything. Driver's door is showing the very first signs of going though so I'll source one of those....Passenger is all good though :th:

I might add that whatever time scale you have for your prep and perhaps Patrick's spray (no denigration intended) something always comes up doubling the time it takes. Especially when bodywork is involved.
Weather
Substrates
Paint reactions
Transportation
Fasteners
Windscreen
Further works

The list goes on of where hiccups can occur.

What I'm trying to say is do you have space in your life for a tight schedule just for the appearance to be right when you could just enjoy the driving. As long as you eventually get to where you want it you should enjoy the journey as well as the result without stressing.

Yeah be patient. Are you sure you need a respray? It's hard to ever get as good a finish as factory.

Oh, it seriously needs a respray. I have oxidisation, paint has reacted in places, lacquer from a cheap blow-over is lifting.....It's goosed

OK, you guys have convinved me to hang fire. I am using the car more often at the moment (took it to the gym last night for example) and want us to get both cars to Yakushi really so I'll take my time, properly prepare the new parts to go onto her and get it all done over the winter :th:

Try a good machine polish first. It is often surprising how well it comes up.

:laughing :laughing

That can be read in a completly different manner ;)

Pete's right though, had this car a LONG time and I'm afraid it's gone way past polishing. Fresh paint is the only answer now....

Plus I have a few new additions that need painting along side it ;)
