Applecross
Tongue to Lairg
Applecross coast road
Skye coast road from Uig
"That" road that snakes down (we all know the one)
The road that runs next to the refinery along the side of a loch and through the tunnels
The Scotsburgring
Durness back to to that ice cream place on the hill
My favourite roads
Ullapool road obviously

Re: 2016 HD routes
With only 4 days in 2016 I suggest Skye be omitted (we tend to go in alternate years).
Dukes Pass.
Dumbarton->Aberfoyle->Lochearnhead->Crianlarich->Tyndrum
Or vice-versa (depending on whether we start from or finish at Dumbarton).
Northern loop.
Ullapool->Inchnadamph->Lochinver->Clachtoll->Kylesku->Durness->
Tongue->Lairg->Laxford Bridge->Ledmore Junction->Ullapool
A939/A93/B940/A924/A9/A923/A984/B9099/A9 to Broxden Junction
Or vice-versa (depending on whether we start from or finish at Perth).
From the A924 to the A9 avoid Pitlochry by taking the minor road past the Edradour distillery.

looks good Tony, and agree we could give Skye a miss this year, still waiting on outcome so still unsure if I can make this oneTonyleFrog wrote:With only 4 days in 2016 I suggest Skye be omitted (we tend to go in alternate years).

Friday: I hope we will be doing this loop rather than via Bridge of Avon and the A95.Ripley wrote:Ok folks, routes are ready. Peter will post more details but for now here is the plan

Omitting ten and a half miles of one of Scotland's best driving roads would be a sin!

Saturday: Wow - either an early start or a lateish lunch! Google Maps says 4hrs 40mins to reach Wick. See below*.
Sunday:
Monday: Plus Tummel Bridge and Aberfeldy?
* Could I make a couple of suggestions re Saturday?
I assume the return to Ullapool will be via the A9 and Lairg. If so, maybe eat in Thurso or Scrabster instead of Wick? - http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant ... tland.html
This would knock nearly an hour off the outbound leg and allow for any unforeseen delays. Then head south on the A9 to Latheron.
Otoh if we do fancy continuing eastwards, rather than JoG, head up to the lighthouse at Duncansby Head. Park up and take this footpath. The view of the coast is totally different from the northern side and is pretty spectacular.

Re: 2016 HD routes
Hi Froggie, happy to eat anywhere along the route. Wick figured for food and fuel. John o groats for those who haven't been but want to say they have.
It would be a shame to go all that way and not visit. I know there isn't much to see. We are flexible as to where we eat.
Thanks for the input

Re: 2016 HD routes
Re Friday:
Is the planned route via Nairn and the A96 anything to do with the Shell filling station by the railway bridge? We have used this route in the past - https://goo.gl/maps/V8g3CLXzdzn
A bit more interesting than the A96 and likely to have less traffic.
The Shell station locator shows the one in Old Perth Road in Inverness to be still in existence. It was closed at one point but I think that was either for a refit or there was a franchisee issue.
