New member, hallo chaps! interesting ownership so far

Post by Bish1999 »

Hello hello,
Finally scored myself a nice 1991 MR2 rev 1 T-top N/A model (with plans to engine swap down the line, not decided with what just yet) so thought I would take the chance to introduce myself on what will be my virtual second home. :D

Drove her down from Durham the other week and then she wouldn't start the next day...
One cracked ignition coil and spark plugs replacement later and she ran smoothly again aside from a slight stutter at high load, low RPM situations.

Gave her an oil and oil filter change as I did the initial repairs and the oil clearly hadn't been changed for a long time (previous owner had it ten years but only drove it 1000 miles, most likely never done in his ownership) so I think the engine hasn't necessarily had quite the care it needed for a while.

Added some injector cleaner in with a fill up the other night and now will only run at partial throttle and is idling roughly.

My first guess is fuel filter is now clogged from 30 years of crap loosening up in the fuel system (looks like the original filter) and is getting starved of fuel. So I'm changing that and diagnosing from there.

Planning on doing the timing belt after that (last confirmed one was at 60K!!!) Followed by ignition timing check and valve clearances.

Anything else I should look at doing while I'm doing the timing?

Mainly modding this thing for reliability first as it's my only car.

Plus it's already got some nice goodies on it, later rev suspension, better brakes and braided lines plus TRD spoiler among the best of them!
God damn needs some new tyres on the rear though

Look forward to chatting to you all, for now enjoy these glorious photos of her after a wash!

PS: anyone else based in the south of UK? I'm in the brigbton area, would be interesting to see if any meets happen with the club. (Post covid restrictions of course)
:cool1:

Old fuel in the system and the fuel pump doesn't like sitting there and not being used for years.

The fuel filter mainly gets blocked by the carbon brushes wearing in the fuel pump. Changed mine years ago, it was really a mess when I cut it open with a hacksaw.

Welcome to the club. :th:
Service interval on the cam belt is 60,000 IIRC and the standard engine is non-interference

Interesting, I didn't realize it was parts of the pump itself that would have worn out and clogged it.
For now fuel filter and getting the engine running nicely is my priority but will be swapping the fuel pump out for a walbro with slightly higher flow rate in the future to prep for engine swap/power mods.

Cheers, I knew it was non-interference but surely it must've been done at somepoint since that mark?
Find it hard to beleive it would have run In the first place otherwise?
Either way after sitting for ten years the rubber is probably perishing, will be done ASAP.

Ah absolutely cracking, not far at all from where I am. Look forward to it!
Rustington's just the other side of Worthing if I recall correctly, seems I'll be alongside you on the way to the meet.

If your mileage is under 120,0000 it may have only needed doing once ;)

Welcome to club!

When doing cam belt it’s best to change wster pump and flush system. The coolant it the most neglected fluid in these cars. Might even pay to flush first and see what gremlins emerge!

Not Plan B again!! Why don't we just go with plan B in the first place?

Sadly it's just over 140 hence my thinking I should at least check it sooner rather than later...

Gotcha, I was thinking do a coolant flush before and after changing the water pump to make sure any crud is gone for good.

Any idea whether oil pump change is necessary? Ideally want to avoid the faf of emptying the oil out as I just changed it and as I've heard unless it's been abused on old oil it should be fine.
