knock from the steering... still.

Post by adamstanford »

If I wiggle my steering wheel from left to right I get a knock, this can be heard when going over potholes, doesn't really affect the handling I don't think. Any ideas?

So far I've replaced.
Arb bushes
Drop links
Tie rods
Track rod ends..

I think it is one of two things, either the lower balljoints or the steering rack itself.
The way it knocks when the car is stationary leads me to believe it's the latter.

I've ordered that plastic inner bush thing from Toyota, and new poly steering rack mounts. Will this cure the knock? Or do the racks deteriorate in other ways.. Reason I'm asking is because I am literally replacing every single thing and would just like to chew on the minds of the knowledgeable

Thanks

Top Mounts maybe, I had mine replaced recently and 4 wheel alignment done at the same time I couldn't believe the state of the old top mounts (although probably 24 years old) They were completely cream crackered !

Pry bar under the wheel and move the suspension up and down, you'll hear or be able to feel the movement on the top nut!

Had the front wheel off today (aswell as the wing and sideskirts.) for much weldage today. Give everything a pry.. Can't find a single thing moving :( I'm ever more suspicious of that plastic inner bush.

Right I got my little sister to jump on the sills of the car whilst I held the top mounts. Can feel about 1/2mm movement both sides when the car goes up and down. Should I be able to feel movement in the top mounts atall??? Cheers

Steering column has a rubber insert in one of the joints. When it goes bad, it creates a few mm of clearance until the metal parts bind up. Look at the base of the steering column where it exits the floor and see if it has any delay as you turn the wheel back and forward.
