Best Solution for more Knee Room?

Post by alasdair aegerter »

Hi,

I'm very tall and I desperately need more knee room on my MK1 as my knees rub against the steering wheel...

I was thinking I could:

- fit a smaller steering wheel (aftermarket?)
- bring the wheel forward somehow (spacers in the steering column?)
- find some way of moving the seat further down/back
- some combination therof or something else?

What do you think the easiest option is ? Bonus points if you can recommend me a garage in the southwest/bristol area that will do it. Advice much appreciated.

Warmest regards,

Al

What year is your MK1?
Edit
I take it you have the seat base adjustment as low as it will go?

1988? When I put the reg into DVLA it says 1988.

I've been researching and it looks like fitting a Momo steering wheel is an option?

And there are also products that claim to be steering wheel extension kits that might do the trick.

What year? The 1a steering wheel is larger than the 1b wheel. Possibly worth considering other seats, I have MK3 seats fitted which IIRC are lower, certainly more supportive and comfortable IMO.

I am 6ft 4 and had a similar problem. A smaller dia wheel with a bigger dish worked for me. Note on a mk2 but the issue is the same

How much better are the Mk3 seats? I'm looking at these:

How hard are these to fit in a Mk1, is it straight forward?

would have been nice to see before and after pictures
Not Plan B again!! Why don't we just go with plan B in the first place?
