Mr2 mk1 1985. Not running after battery mishap

Post by Mr G1969 »

Hi
After many years i managed to find a really solid example.
Had it running after sitting for 2 years.
I changed the battery today and i mixed the terminals. ( wrong way round)
White smoke came off the black lead😬
I pulled it off immediately.
Now there is nothing
No lights on dash no fuel pump cutting in..
Zero..
Have checked fuses. All seem good.
Any suggestions would be v helpful.
Thqnks..

You will have blown the fusible link and it will need replaced, this article will show you it's location. https://www.mr2oc.co.uk/know-your2/mk1/ ... -link.html
Any good auto electrician will be able to replace it (or supply a replacement)

All MR2's have the fusible link on the Positive lead ;)

Hello again
The problem was indeed the fuseable link.
Wierdly, there was no link as such.
Itvhad been bypassed i believe.
Its running very riughly ( missiing on 2 cylinders)
Limped it home, is now at mechanics.
I love this car as i owned one years ago.
Thank you for your advice i will post more when its running properly.
Great job guys

The link just looks like a piece of cable. There's a specific rating for it which you can find on the electrical drawings, these can be downloaded from here https://www.mr2oc.co.uk/download-cats/c ... 0-mk1.html Same place also has the MK1 BGB, aka the Big Green Book aka the Toyota workshop manual. Also the Toyota 4A-GE engine manual
Also shown here https://www.toyotaguru.us/mr2-mk1-1989- ... links.html

although his knowledge and parts stock are second to none, don't rely on him replying to any messages/ emails. Best keep ringing until you speak to Paul directly

Those aren't Toyota part numbers ;)
1985 rotor arm is 19102-16060
1985 distributor cap is 19101-16080
I've never had a problem getting caps or rotor arms, try MR2BEN if TCB don't have any or eBay.
Suprisingly enough Amazon is alway worth a look https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?rh=n%3A30364 ... to_pf_dp_s

Thanks for that. πŸ‘
I have had to oder a blueline cap and rotor via ebay ( ireland)
There are very few around now.
I called euro car motex and many more.
All had same issue with supply.
International car parts is the company if anyone else is struggling to find some.
