MOT Advisory Help Please
Hi all
My Mk1b T-Bar passed its MOT today . It also got its first advisory in 12 years :-(
This is listed as Steering Column Universal Joint has slight wear or play. The guy said it was in the smaller nearer steering wheel part of the column. I'm in no way mechanically minded. I've had a look at the workshop manual and I'm still no clearer. Ideally I would like this sorting. I was aware that there was some movement through the steering wheel when I bought the car but wasn't sure if it was something or not. Now I know!
Grateful for any advice on what's needed to fix this and where I can get whatever is needed from.
Many thanks!
Peter.

Re: MOT Advisory Help Please
There's actually 2 U/J's on the column + the sliding joint so you need to determine where the play is, play in the column is often due to failure of the rubber in the sliding joint check out this thread for more info

Re: MOT Advisory Help Please
Thanks for the help, Jimi.
I will check this out after the Bank Holiday and see if the info you linked to is a possible solution. In my view, a couple of in place tiny welds sounds like a sensible fix and they would probably break easily in the event of a crash.
It would be nice to have a fix that doesn't entail megabucks or a major component stripdown. I will update the thread once I get this sorted.
I hope you stay healthy, Jimi. You seem like the only assistance to be found . Cheers .

Re: MOT Advisory Help Please
hopefully I'll be about for while yet, always happy to help if I can
If you lie upside down with your head in the footwell while wiggling the steering wheel & holding a torch you might be able to narrow down where the play is

Re: MOT Advisory Help Please
Hi all
An update to this thread as it may be helpful to somebody else.
I've had the welding done today. Two spot welds, one either side, as detailed in the thread Jimi linked to. We also identified that the steering wheel itself was a bit loose so tightened the nut up there too. The result is a rock solid steering wheel now which means that the car is so much more enjoyable to drive. The cost of this..£20 so I'm extremely happy with that!
Thanks again to Jimi for the help .
