red engine fan warning light
Hi peeps, cars all welded up now, so nearly MOT time!!
just drove it home, and the red fan warning light has come on, does this relate to the fan in the engine bay or the fans on the rad?
any ideas what i could be?

It's the engine bay cooling fan. Unplug the temp sensor and the fan should run continuously, if it doesn't there's either a problem with the fan itself or the cooling fan computer.

Busy busy When you putting it in for it's MOT ?
No, it's on a bracket at #4 cylinder end of the head, you can see it on this pic it's just below the lifting bracket

Could be a faulty wire, problem with the relay.
To test turn car on unplug the temp sensor, go for a drive. Its a very simple thing just hope its not a problem with the wiring. I had my relay removed and bridged so the fan ran 24/7.
Black box can be found in the boot next to the ecu, easy to replace just unplug.
Faulty fan - 20mins to 1 hour job, Depending on if you drop your socket set into the engine bay. Has 3 bolts holding it on.
If its a fault fan I have a good condition one, no rust fully working £18 posted.
*EDIT* MK1 section didn't realise sorry mate.

no probs logik!
busy busy, sounds interesting!?
MOT couple of weeks, just a few body bits to do, and the car needs a good run to free the front brakes a little, which is a little hard as the car has no T&T on it.
other wise new disks, and the exhaust is blowing slightly!
nothing majour now!
ill keep you updated

unplugged the sensor and fan now running constant, but warning light still on.
funny thing is the fan used to run constant before, with the sensor plugged in, its only recently its not been working. So is down to the sensor, and can you get new ones?

If the light is on still it would be your ecu putting up a fault, see if you can borrow one.

Sounds like the cooling fan ECU, it's in the boot on the RHS of the engine bulkhead, behind the trim panel. Grey box IIRC. I may have a spare if your stuck, I'll have a look.
Thinking about it, it may be the sensor, I'll see if I have a spare one.

surly if the sensor is unplugged then it s out the loop anyways? saying that i had same problem, my fan used to run on and off take it for a blast see if it is still running, could still be a dodgey fan.jimi wrote:Sounds like the cooling fan ECU, it's in the boot on the RHS of the engine bulkhead, behind the trim panel. No that won't affect it. You can test the sensor with a meter, it should be less than 300 ohms with the air temp above 80 deg C and more than 380 ohms with the air temp below 64 deg C. I have a spare relay but don't have a sensor.
