Undercarriage issue - serious?

Post by adenbakker »

Hi,

In the midst of prepping my MR2 (1991, mine since Sep of this year) for a respray I had it up on the lift. Took some photo's and having a closer look home I discovered an unnerving issue where the front (right) wheel link conncects to the underbody. There is a crack running through the structural member, looks like its all the way through (will have to go back for a better look).

Anyone seen this before? Causes?? Any suggestions how to fix ? (weld, replace?).
Any help is welcome - would like to know what I'm up against before spending money on a respray of a broken car :crybaby:

Thanks,
Andrew

Looks like an mot fail. Get a skilled welder to V down the crack and weld up or
replace.

That is s very strange place to have a fracture. Never seen that before on a MR2 and I would be concerned with the underlying cause.

not seen or heard of this before.
if can be replaced then replace it with good part.

if cant be replaced then drill small hole either end of crack to relieve the stress. As suggested get someone to v weld it (inc the drill holes). then if it were mine I would have a patch plate over the top to add extra support.

Just to set your (and my) minds at rest: after having another good look under the car it is very apparent that what I first saw as a crack is actually the join between two plates making up the complete construction. It is the same for both the left and right side. Some how the acute shadow of the flash-photo gives the appearance of a crack, but in "real life" it is very obvious. Silly me...
At least this saves a lot of unplanned work - now just to find out why the car isn't starting any more.... :confused1:

Cheers,
Andrew
