Battery Recommendations
Hey,
So my battery looks like it is on it's way out as it is losing charge rapidly and takes a few turns to fire up.
Just wondering if anyone had any battery recommendations? i.e. min Ah or CCA.
I've found a 70Ah 590CCA on ebay for 50 quid:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JAPANESE-TYP ... GTH2IFo%3D
or something like a Bosch 60Ah 540CCA;
https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Toyo ... 92a&000020
For 50quid is the above too good to be true??
Cheers.
Scott

Re: Battery Recommendations
I tend to purchase from Halfords or ECP as it's easier to take back if there are any issues. Andy

Re: Battery Recommendations
An NS70 made by Yuasa if you can find one. If they are still making them as good as the last one I bought they last 10 years. Nothing else i have tried even comes close.
https://www.yuasabatteries.co.nz/resour ... /ns70/info
More expensive than everything else, but then it lasts up to three times as long.

Re: Battery Recommendations
AFAIK Yuasa has never been sold a battery with that type number in the UK.
It is possible to fit a type 096 battery to a Mk2. It's longer than a 005L so quite a tight squeeze.
Also it means tweaking the pos & neg cables slightly to get them to line them up.
The other difference is the height. It's about 50mm lower than the 005L.
So you'll need some packing to allow the clamp to do its job.
I salvaged some scrap MDF and cut it to fit the battery tray.
The advantage of the 096 is it's easier to find one with higher Ah and CCA ratings than a 005L.
The latter figure is Cold Cranking Amps. It's a measure of how much 'punch' the battery has.
More = better, especially on freezing cold winter mornings.

I just bought a Yuasa silver 5000 from Halfords with a 5 year warranty. Works fine! Fingers crossed it lasts!

this is what I have in V6
usually last 3/4 years with no issues on the car (very much not a daily). still good enough for my garage 12v supply for another 3 years before the plates start to really fail.
If it fails then its cheap enough delivered not to worry

Re: Battery Recommendations
Running old batteries in mine but they still start the car.
The issue is its not a daily driver. One battery I have is May 2007 and the other is May 2014. Technically they are both stuffed.
What I suspect is that they are now both suffering high self discharge. You only need to leave it a week and the batteries are flat.
Probably I should buy a new battery but instead I'm putting up a 6 foot pole with a 50W solar panel on it, 10 meter twin lead to the car and a solar charger off the battery with some MC4 solar connectors.
More as a fun project to make it a "Hybrid Electric MR2 Turbo"
The panels are now cheap and so are the controllers on E-Bay. You can adjust the float Voltage and the panel is capable of putting out over a couple of Amps in bright sunlight. This keeps the battery fully topped up and extends its life significantly. It will not matter what the weather is doing, during "Daylight hours" there will be enough power from the solar panel to keep it fully charged.
Will do a full write up with pictures when its completed.

Re: Battery Recommendations
I have had a Bosch blue top in my 2 since summer of 2011. It is just starting to lose charge in a couple of weeks of standing. It has been flattened and recharged on numerous occasions. So if they are still the same quality then worth the £60 or so that I paid
1991 rev 1 T Bar n/a 3sge import. A work in progress!!!

I wouldn't buy another Panasonic PNS70L, you would think it was also a top battery but its made in Thailand and they are crap.
Also another totally weird thing with it is that there is a continuous bleed of some sort of oily substance in the cells that sticks the red and blue balls of the charge state indicator together and doesn't visually indicate the charge state correctly. I need to keep removing it and cleaning it with dish washing liquid and a paint brush, hit with compressed air to check the balls are moving and refit.
Yeah I already know, if your balls stick together you should seek medical attention.
