MK2 aftermarket steering wheels.
Hi All,
I am after some advice regarding aftermarket steering wheels.
As I am tall (6'3") and have to have the seat fully back. I have the problem of the steering wheel being to far away for comfort. I also use the car for trackdays and find I am having to lean forwards.
I would like to fit a replacement wheel with a spacer but have never done this on a car with an aribag before.
Any advice about removing an airbag wheel and MOT implications would be great.
Also advice on wheel adaptor bosses and spacers would be good too.
I did do a search but could not find a thread for it.
Many thanks in advance.

Re: MK2 aftermarket steering wheels.
The MOT implication is that "An airbag fitted as original equipment obviously missing" is listed as a major defect.
That said, the word "obviously" gives a large amount of wiggle room an I would guess a properly fitted aftermarket wheel on an rev5 would get through MOT with the vast majority of testers.
Here's my video on fitting a steering wheel:

Re: MK2 aftermarket steering wheels.
Never had an issue with mine, but as the UK market airbags are mechanical, there is no airbag light or anything else to suggest there was an airbag there in the first place.

Thanks for the advice and video.
I think I will contact my local MOT station.
With the rules changing recently I think a check is in order.

Re: MK2 aftermarket steering wheels.
Your obviously using the lever under the steering wheel for up down and to telescope the wheel out to you ?
Not sure why you have a problem, I'm 6"1 and have no issues.

Re: MK2 aftermarket steering wheels.
Most aren't telescopic, OP may not have that adjustment.

Hi,
Yes, mine does not move forwards and rear only up and down.
I guess that is because it has the air bag.

Sorry about that I assumed that the reach adjustment was a standard feature.
