Intake Manifold help!

Post by marleyrules »

Morning all,

Apologies if this is a really simple question, very amateur mechanic here. I recently ordered a replacement intake manifold for my 2.0 NA Gen2, however what i've received doesn't match the picture on the ad, or the current manifold on my MR2.

After doing some research it appears i've been sent an import version manifold, is this correct?

More importantly, will this fit my car with the correct gasket? Embarrassingly i've spent hours polishing it up before noticing!

Any help greatly appreciated.

Type currently on my car:

Type I have received:

pretty sure it doesnt fit. The import didnt have a hole for the cold-start injector.

I'm not sure whether this is an import or why it's different, that was what I was guessing at from research.

Follow up question - where is the cold-start injector located? Surprisingly hard to track down for google!

I didn't think the NAs had cold start injectors... just the early turbos.

BTW, I'm not sure I see the difference. Someone has polished the one you got sent (in the other photo, the manifold has been painted) and changed the sticker on it, but it fundamentally looks like the same part to my eyes.

Edit: To my surprise, there are different part numbers between Europe (17109-88360) and Japan (17109-74040) for that manifold! I wonder how significant the difference is?

I’ve never seen a Jap import manifold like that on a 3sge. I’m betting it’s off something like a 5sfe which was used for USDM market.

It looks nothing like a 5sfe manifold:

Looks like the same manifold that was on my rev2 Japanese import which was different to the UK rev2 engine I had for a while which had the cold start injector just behind the TV where the Japanese just has a vacuum line.

Are you sure you didn't have a 3sfe?

IIRC they did have cold start injectors.

Well, I never know it had a cold start injector. Learn something new every day!

Still the 3s-ge manifolds looks naff-all like the 3s-fe or 5s-fe ones.

Yea the sfe manifolds are very different to the 3sge.
In conclusion to the op yes you have a UK manifold and the replacement you bought was from an import.
I wouldn't bother trying to fit it. It would be alot of work to block off the fuel line for the injector you can't fit best just to source the correct one.

As a side note Mark I was chatting with one of my colleagues the other day and turn out he used to work with you. Gordon Bissel likes his BMW's he said you would probably remember him.
