S54 tranny problem

Post by rdmr2 »

I have as S54 transmission with 60,0000kms with a Gen4 motor.

I now having problems with 2nd gear, I have to gently put it into 2nd gear with rpms under 2200 or it will grind.

I assume the 2nd gear syncros need to be replace?

If I have it rebuilt, is there anything else I should replace while its out, all the other gears work fine?

I'm trying to find a used s54 in Canada, but they hard to come buy, are there any other s54 trannys that can be used with the mr2 without extensive labor or extra parts?

Thanks

I presume you mean 60,000km not 600,000km ? One would mean its never had an oil change the other is a miracle.

Is the clutch OK? Have you tried draining and changing the gearbox oil? You can also look for debris in the old oil. Worth try.

I wouldn't put in a used one, chances are it has the same problem. People just don't change the oil in these, if they did it would last a lifetime. The labour cost if your not doing it yourself to then have another one fail is not worth it.

Would it be worth looking at upgrading to a e153 gearbox from a turbo car? I don't think it'll be an easy find but always worth keeping an eye out for one

I found a s54 with 100,000klm that I can drive before it comes out, if I can find a e153, gonna cost me a few more $ to convert it, prime driven sells a conversion kit, I just learned today that Toyota japan no longer sells 2nd gear syncros for the e153, they ran out of stock and not producing anymore

Parts are getting more scarce for the mr2, better stock up.

Check out this tranny for a 2gr

Yeah thats why I use Castrol Syntrax 75W-90 and change it every 60,000km. Got to mine in time, first change it had was 64,000Km, the factory oil was terrible and hard to shift. Now the car has done over 230,000Km on the same engine and gearbox.

Unless these cars really start to go up in value, they will just be rolling into the wreckers over here now as the cost of a major repair is just not worth it. Pretty much plan on running mine until the day it dies. Coming up for 22 years of ownership late April.
