As my rev 2 tubby ecu is away off (again) to get repaired, I have been forced into looking at replacement computers.
Has anyone had any experience using a Link ECU?
I know they are expensive, however I’m looking at it as an investment
I can get my mitts on one for about £900 delivered that will come with a base Rev 2 map to get the car running and I’d have to get it tuned somewhere but for the ease of plug and play, reliability and the potential to tune in the future?!
May give you some flexibility if your planning on making some decent modifications but i wouldn't expect big power gains on an otherwise stock engine. I remember a company over here doing piggy back stuff on the stock ECU but the power gains just turned out to be the same as adding a manual boost controller and fuel cut defense to the stock ECU. 170kW at the wheels was it.
Try and find a tuner that has experience setting them up before buying one. If I couldn't find one then probably its not a great idea.
Adding power isn’t really the incentive (yet) more that I am running out of options of what ecu to get to get my car running.
Can’t find a rev 2 ecu for sale, rev 1 won’t work, rev 3 requires a few (expensive) changes and I’m now struggling for ideas on what to do. Don’t want to bin a perfectly good car as the ecu had a damaged board
If you go to the Link website you will notice that there are only two options for the MR2 Turbo ECU.
The V1 or the V2-V3 so this would imply there are only 2 main Toyota ECU variants. The difference being the AFM or MAF the CT26 or the CT20b turbo or the 440 or 550cc injectors.
Links are excellent EMS and will certainly work gone. There are lots of other PNP choices out there though including Megasquirt, Motec, AEM, Hydra,etc. as stated above you would need to get it programmed and tuned at some point and done Tuners only work with certain computers.
If you want to go alone then Megasquirt MSPNP is the way. They are set-up for DIY jobs and have great forum support. I’ve had one for years and do all my own tuning.
One would hope that the base map would be pretty much a copy of the stock ECU. The possible exceptions would be for things to get rid of the external ECU boxes I have connected to get rid of the 180km/hr speed limit, fuel cut etc. If it also came with boost control then thats a bonus.
Link would be fun if you then go on and modify the car a bit, it would certainly give you the option to perform a true "Tune" of the car rather than what I did of just boosting the Voltage to the fuel pump with a DC-DC converter and increasing the boost and adding a load of external electronic plug ins to do individual tasks.
Yeah that was my thinking, I have spoken to a Link specialist down in England who not only sells but tunes Link and he has said it will have a base map specifically for my car on it.
I think it is wise to put the feelers out to a couple different companies too, I have already emailed Megasquirt to see what they can offer.
I don’t think I’m one of those guys chasing 500hp as I like my original Jap styling and feel while driving, however Link/MS would not only fix my ecu troubles but would give me options in the future
