is this 3sgte motor I found a good deal or a gigantic headache waiting to happen?

Post by McMorgan »

Hi all, New member to the forum. Sorry for the long first post, hopefully it’s a fun one.

So I’ve stumbled across a 92 rev 2 import turbo engine that I reckon is a good deal, I’m not sure so I figure Ile explain it to you guys and you can tell me what you think.

it’s a Japanese import. 92 or 93. 150 thou kilometres on the taco. Engines out of the car as he sold the gearbox. Dry stored in his shed for some months it looks like. Turns over easy with a short bar, no wierd noises or feels while doing it. There’s no starter, distributor cap or ignition leads. Flywheel has some surface rust but seems good from what I can tell. Turbo spool moves about 2mm up and down and about a hair back and forth. Clean of oil, can’t see any on it anywhere on the inside of the turbo, some oil was on the intake before the throttle body but it was a very fine smear coating.

Behind the thermostat looked very clean, mainly just colour on clean metal. Alternators pulley has seized. Could be just stuck didn’t really put my hand to unseizing it.

There wasn’t any oil in it so I couldn’t get any info from that unfortunately and the plugs weren’t original so again couldn’t gain any knowledge there. Not great. Still it turns over nicely and seems in good condition.

Now for the price. So the full engine including the turbo, engine loom, ecu, intercooler, piping, fuel pump, and the rear half of the cars loom is £600 quid.

I’ve owned an na mr2 for four years now and that seems a very keen price for a turbo motor and fixings but again I’m no expert.

So what do you think? Good value or a run away moment? Ive got a freshly rebuilt na I’m happy with so this engine will be a nice slow rebuild with an eventual view for a swap

Thanks for reading

Turbo sounds well worn. If you want to do it properly you need the transmission, driveshafts, and rear hubs.

why are there so many things missing? does seem a bit odd. it does sound like it might be a bit of a headache...

when i had my first mr2 and was very naive, I bought an engine for £300...and it was a complete dog. And so much time/money was wasted. It has made me very suspicious and cautious!

I think unless there's evidence that the engine/turbo etc. worked well before it was pulled out, personally, I'd steer clear.
