Dizzy cap drought?

Post by Bish1999 »

I've been trying to get a hold of a dizzy cap for my rev 1 NA for over a month now and can't get one anywhere.
MR2 ben is out of stock and the 2 listings I've bought from ended up being for the 5mm leads in the later models so I've sent them back.
Any ideas?

I've got my replacement rotor and leads but I worry putting those one while still having the old cap will put more accelerated wear on the whole system, anyone know if this is the case?

The rotor pretty much never wears out its just the cap that gets hammered.

I did wonder about long term supply of these from Toyota. We have an old Honda Integra and the caps not been available for years, you have to go aftermarket.

Got 2 or 3 used ones in a box, never threw the old ones out. They can get pretty bad before you have issues. The N/A is less critical than the turbo.

No more wear on the system, your spark just gradually gets weaker.

The rotor arm suffers from spark erosion similar to the cap, just not as much. The combination of erosion on the cap contacts and the rotor increases the gap between the contacts which weakens the spark. Won't matter in the short term, but eventually you'll need to change both.

Only one they have in stock is the exact blueprint part I am returning to another seller, later version for the 5mm leads not the 7mm as mine is.
It appears as though my only option is Toyota themselves but they wanted about 100 for the cap only :w_tf:

That's sort of out of budget for me, I'll have to keep looking till I can find something.

Measure the old one vs the new one with a vernier, you cannot measure the difference.

From memory the surface looked a little "Pitted". Thinking that was "Wear" I then got the new one and it was exactly the same !!!!

The Dizzy cap however gets vapourized, if you inspect it closely what material that is not missing actually turns into a bit of an insulator. The insulator just falls off in a chunk if you poke it.

Bit of a shame that some sort of platinum layer couldn't have been added, then again coil overs came along and solved that problem and the HT lead problem in one go.

Couldn't find a dizzy cap, but that site has been bookmarked. Cracking prices on there!

Their options for the NA are 89-90 and 91>. Mine is a 91 but im sure it uses the 89-90 system.
Thanks for the site, saved me a few pennies there! :yahoo:

Sadly even GT4 have them out of stock, clearly I'm not the only one in need of a dizzy cap at the moment!

My new leads appear to have solved my problems for now but I shall be keeping an eye out for a dizzy cap so I have that and the new rotor ready for when they start properly deteriorating performance.
