Changing the soft top from plastic to mohair !
Have had my MR2 for around 3 weeks.
All looks really good but the pvc soft top is cracking in a few places and has 3 small tears at various points.
I can buy a new mohair soft top for around £400 but need to know how easy is it to install.
If it is a specialist job does anyone know of a fitter in the north east of Scotland?

Why not just repair the cracks with a few merkins seen together?

That is probably the short term solution to stop any further deterioration !

I posted on your other thread Maurice that the only person I know of that comes highly recommended is a guy down in Swansea and he needs the car to ensure the fit and tensioning are all good.
Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone your way, unless of course you fancy a driving holiday in S. Wales....which isn't actually as bad as it sounds.

Thanks Torero
I spoke to Raymond in Swansea this morning and he confirmed the price and also that is can be rather awkward to fit.
I was hoping a retired Saab technician I know personally would be able to help as he has done several Saab 900s but there is a lot to be said for having a "jolly" down to Swansea & get it done right.
It would be a round trip of 1124 mile which means about 90 litres of fuel so would have to worked into a mini holiday.
Thankfully at the moment I am weatherproof.

Did you end up going down to Raymond? I got mine replaced the other month - it's a bargain at his price.

If you Google Jack R Smith in Swansea lots of info comes up. It's his son that runs it, I believe.
Costs just over £300 for supply and fit from other posts I've seen, although I don't think it's true mohair but maybe others on here who have had one fitted can tell you what it is and how good it is? He seems to get a good name.

Having seen his work it's top notch and well worth the trip.
Worked out cheaper for me to transport the car from Essex have the hood fitted an transported back than it would to have it done by anyone reputable local to me

Hi Mark, drop Dan (DPeg) a PM, he's used Jack Smith and was very happy with the quality of the hood and workmanship. Also, try the mr2roc (Roadster Owners Club) there's plenty on the forum that have had this done by Jack Smith and are more than happy with the finished item.skidmark66 wrote: ↑04/07/17 6:46 Having inspected my hood im thinking a new one would be the best way forward for me. Re: Changing the soft top from plastic to mohair !
Hi Mark,
I had my hood done at Jack Smiths a couple of months ago, see below:
http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB3/viewtopic. ... 7&start=90 for the build thread and a pulled pic here:
I'd absolutely recommend him, hardest part is choosing the colour!
What are you going to go for?

Re: Changing the soft top from plastic to mohair !
Is this switch to mohair primarily a cosmetic move or are there any practical benefits?
