Cutting out issues help please

Post by skidmark66 »

Car is 02. After spending loads on the car it now decides it wants to let me down only when it feels like it mind. Ok here is the problem wife goes to shops all fine then comes back out to go home car wont start it tries but it wont hold on the throttle and also battery light comes on. She walks home only a half hour walk I then go back with her and car starts and drives fine all the way home. Yesterday she drives to me saying car feels a bit juddery ok says I let me drive it again I take it for a good thrash and its fine. Today she calls me and says it lost power on motorway and battery light comes on again pulls over has a good swear then car starts fine and off she goes.
Right Im pretty sure the battery is good but im going to change it today anyway with one I know is spot on.
Has anyone got any ideas what this may be if its not the battery please. Im pulling my hair out with this now. A mate did say look at the alternator but that was replaced a few years ago could it be another one is required. I don't know getting the hump with it now.
Please help me :confused1:

Ok update it would appear that the battery light is not coming on when it cuts out.
It happened again on the way home today at about 40 mph it just cuts out for a couple of seconds then comes back to life and drives home fine. Poxy motor.

Im old school when it comes to cars. The last car I fixed was my old 1600E Cortina you knew where every thing was on one of them. These modern day motors do my head in.

start with the simple things,
battery terminals on tight? they are an issue on the mk2.
if yes they are then start looking at terminals on alt, etc see if they are ok, not corroded or loose.

if nothing get a code reader as not expensive, worth their weight in gold on later cars

This, worth taking them off, cleaning both and refitting.
When you say "not starting" do you mean the engine isn't turning over or is it turning over and not starting ?
Black is not a colour ! .... Its the absence of colour

I do wish I still had the 1600E yes but hey fond memories. MRHAPPY62 im not far away from west sussex im in kent medway towns so if you could help it would be much appreciated.
Jimi to answer your question it only wouldn't start the once which was on sunday. The rest of the time its been fine starts fine on the button I had the car for 4 hours yesterday periodically starting it it and no problems. I checked as many connectors as poss in engine bay all fine checked coil packs to see if visibly ok replaced every thing started car purrs like a kitten.
Wife left for home got 5 miles down the road engine cuts out for a few secs while driving then fires back up and she travels another 6 miles home no problems.
Im not going to let this beat me I need to get to the bottom of this.
Can I just add im not on the sponge here I will gladly pay for any ones time and effort as well.
Thanks
Mark.

If it's any help, I had a similar issue, mine would cut out during low revs but only on the odd occasion (3 or 4 times over a month) but would restart immediately. I dropped it at a friend's house so we could investigate and I turned it over in the street before getting it into his garage. Doing this on a dark December night showed it was arc'ing from the coil pack and all I did was change the king lead and it solved the problem for good.

As the symptoms are almost identical and with winter approaching I'd check replace/coil pack and king lead and also check the earths points are clean and fit for purpose.
