Mk3 FL rear wheel bearing / axle hub, replacing brake back plate

Post by I_am_not_an_engineer »

Long time lurker, first time poster. Searched for this but could'nt find anything which makes me think I'm overlooking something obvious, or over thinking things.

I'd like to replace the brake back plates on the rear hubs. The back plates are behind the axle hubs, and I'm comfortable with being able to unstake the hub nut and get that off (30mm 12pt socket). But if I use a bearing puller to pull the axle hub off, how easy is it to get it back on after I've swapped the back plate? Presumably the wheel bearing comes off with the axle hub, can I just gently encourage it back on or would it need to be pressed in (meaning taking the whole control arm off)?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi. Did you find anything on this for the front break backing plates? I need to change mine as they are shot...but can't find any diagrams or anything to do with this and how to do it at all...any help would be great. Thanks. M.

I think everyone just gives up on this job when they learn how much work is involved to replace them.

I just wiggled the really rusty sections of mine until they came off and left the rest.
