NVH
Driving on the motorway I get a bad vibration around 65 to 75 MPH. Lifting off the throttle eases things a bit, but going onto half throttle results in a vibration similar to bad wheel balance. Full throttle is rather alarming, with very bad vibration and harshness throughout the car.
The car was fitted with new wheels and Nankang tyres shortly before I bought it around 3 months ago. New rear brake disks and pads were fitted a couple of weeks ago at MoT time and wheels were balanced just last week, when I was told that nothing was needed on the rears as they were perfectly balanced.
When I took the car for MoT I had to slowly move it around the garage forecourt and noticed that at barely walking pace there was a 'cyclic' lumpy effect as if I was driving over a brick etc.
I asked the mechanic to check it out during the test, but he found nothing to explain the fault, but suggested
changing the disks and pads, which he said still had life in them, but as I already had new replacements with the car he thought it worthwhile to change them.
There appears to be no excessive movement in the engine mounts, but of course that may be different at speed. With the rear of the car on axle stands I have spun the wheels, with no roughness or tight spots. Driving the wheels while on the stands showed no faults either.
Any ideas guys?

Re: NVH
What is the condition of the rear subframe like? They dont take the rear "nappy" off for mots so they can corrode badly and it is not picked up. They can become dangerously corroded.
Presumably all the bushes were checked for play at mot. Are the new wheels and tyres the same as stock? What tyre pressures are you using?
If the rear subframe has been disturbed and not torqued up properly that can apparently be horrible to drive.
The suspension may also be past its "sell by date" if it has never been changed.
Have you had the wheel alignment checked?

Re: NVH
Is the centre bore of the wheels correct? If not do you have spigot rings fitted? MR2's should have hub centric wheels fitted or the results can be quite can be severe. MK3 centre bore is the same as the MK1 https://www.mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2.htm ... kbartid=85

Re: NVH
Thanks for those two replies. It gives me something else to check, things I hadn't thought of.
An anti-roll bar drop link and a suspension damper were changed at MoT time and the front wheel alignment was adjusted.
The previous owner fitted 19" wheels, which I am running with 22psi in the fronts and 23.5 in the rears.
This problem has been the same before and after the new parts were fitted.

Re: NVH
Been under the car today, and the 'nappy' is missing, however the sub-frame looks and feels solid.
All wheels spin freely with no visible run-out or variation in circumference when spinning.
The wheels fit perfectly with the centre bore matching the hub correctly, and yes MR Happy the wheels are 19"
Does anyone know of an MR2 specialists in Yorkshire?

Re: NVH
I was going to ask about the 19s too! The only time I have heard of them on a mk3 is with a widebodykit where they are needed to fill the arches.
I have heard people say that having 17s on the mk3 ruins the handling and they have been much happier going back to 16/15s as the Facelift car has as standard.
Sounds like you may have found your issue?

Re: NVH
The first thing I would suggest is ask if there is someone in your area with a set of stock wheels who would be willing to do a temporary swap for a morning/afternoon. Find out whether those 19" ones are part of the problem. Unfortunately I'm the opposite end of the country so unable to assist.

Re: NVH
A wheel swop would be a great first step.
Can you post some pictures of the car so we can see what it looks like on 19s?

Re: NVH
That would explain the 19s then!
If you find nothing wrong with the car then you will have to consider changing the wheels. I can see that you would not want standard MR2 wheels on that but maybe drop to 17s max?
Might be worth checking all the tyres for "eggs" as there will not be much absorbtion from those sidewalls.
