All tyres have been checked, by myself, the MoT tester and then by ATS, who balanced the fronts, but said the rears were spot on.
I agree with you on wheel size, I prefer to have 17's, which will give me a better ride with the extra compliance of higher profile side-walls.
I can afford to buy new/used wheels and tyres now, but if that doesn't fix things I won't have the money to continue searching for an answer.

Check your front brake caliper pistons & slider pins aren't sticking/binding. I had a sticky front caliper piston that intermittently used to cause similar symptoms, once I refurbished the calipers it went away and has been fine since.
