Darkish Smoke, acrid smell

Post by SimonTappenden »

I have just purchased an 2001 model with 36k miles, at high revs 6k it smokes and a bit more as you release the throttle, but then it clears, no warning lights, runs and drives fine...

Any ideas what I should check please?

Could be a few things but sounds to me like over fueling / fuel injection issue, i'd replace the are air filter, empty the tank and run some 99 ron fuel through it. May as well drop the oil and change the oil filter and fuel filter while your at it.

If the low miles are genuine has it been sat for a long time?

Its was sat for 6 years, its had a full service, I have changed the air sensor, done 2000 miles since it was got running again, drives fine but it does seem like a fuel issue as if oil it would be grey smoke,

I have checked the plugs and air sensor again, all seem ok but plugs are dark so it’s probably running to rich, but I don’t know why or what to check next

Check for exhaust leaks and if you've already changed the MAF then maybe its Lambda Sensor or Open Injectors

I am waiting for a code machine to arrive, no lights on the dash.
Exhaust is rattling a bit but it might be a heat shield. Ordered a new MAF sensor too...
