Discs Life Expectancy

Hi everyone, can anyone tell me how long on average a set of fron discs should last on an MR-S?

My girlfriends roadster is barley used, she only does somehwere in the region of 6k-8k per annum and the car has around 53,000 on it now and she has been told the discs need changing.

Is there an easy way to tell. On my old Mk1 I remember feeling a lip on the outer edge of the disc and this was a sign the discs needed changing. Does this still apply?
