New Stereo setup

Post by midshipmad »

So as some of you may know i recently bought a rev 2 Mk2 MR2, and i love her.

I took my wife out for a ride in it the other day and realised how shocking my audio is (all stock)

So i'm thinking of pulling it all out and going for a renewal.
I'm not going for SPL or mad volume, just nice sounding kit, I mainly listen to rap / R&B and dubstep / jungle / D&B. Ideally i don't want to start cutting up door cards and messing with spacers unless i can buy them pre-made cheap.
I would also like to remove the stock amps if easily done?

Here is what i am thinking, would love some input:

Headunit (already have)
Alpine UTE-72BT
https://www.alpine.co.uk/p/Products/SingleView/UTE-72BT

Front Speakers
Boss Audio Systems BRS52 - 13cm (5.25") 60W speakers

Tweeters
Stock Tweaters / none

Rear Speakers
Rockford Fosgate Punch Series: P132 3.5'' 2-Way Full Range Speakers
http://caraudiosecurity.com/punch-serie ... e-speakers

Subwoofer
Stealth ST9250 in Auto Acoustics stealth box (from mr2oc member)
http://car-hifi-deals.de/shop/subwoofer.html

Amp (fitted behind seats)
EITHER
Kenwood KAC-PS4D

OR
Boss PH2.500

Looks good to me, I would be inclined to spend more on the front speakers and get some splits to give a little more clarity.

I'm in serious need of some bass in mine, I have 2 splits at the front and a couple of mids in the middle but needs bass. Good balance is the key

Front speakers are trash, frankly. If your budget is limited you'd be better off forgetting the rear speakers and spending £60-70 on some decent budget 6.5inch component speakers for the front. I know you said you aren't keen on making spacers, but it's super easy to do and the 6.5's are so much better.

Something like this - http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/speaker ... er-ex-demo

Or this - http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/speaker ... t-speakers would be a good budget choice.

The whole system seems a little mismatched - why do you need such an expensive amplifier only to pair it with a entry level head unit and entry level speakers?

What is your total budget? Given you've linked to a £450 amplifier, I would look at something like this instead:

Focal Performance Expert PS165 - £149.99
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listi ... dition=new
http://www.focal.com/en/car-audio/car-a ... its/ps-165

Rainbow Dream 4 - £129.99 (listed at £199 elsewhere... check before buying!)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rainbow-271035 ... B00SMSKB56
http://www.rainbow-audio.de/en/amplifier/dream/

You can bridge the rear channels on the Rainbow amp to power the subwoofer.

Thanks, sorry I already have both amps and head unit so it's just the speakers I'm querying, I did hear that I should forget about rear speakers and just run decent fronts?

Ah, fair enough. Yeah, those speakers in your original post are wasted on that Kenwood, amp, it's pretty nice!

The rear speakers don't really do much in such a small space - all they'll do is pull the soundstage back a little bit so it will sound like the centre point of the sound is a bit closer to the rear of the car. You'll see much better results from spending the money on better front speakers. If there's budget left over then sure, swap them out.

I personally run Hertz ESK 165.5's in mine - http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/hertz-energy-esk-165-5 - lucked out on a deal and got them for ~£105. The sound quality is excellent, the only downside about them is they need a fair bit of power to really wake them up and get the best out of them.

If you have a budget in mind for the front speakers I'd be happy to narrow it down to 3 - 4 options to choose from.

First Geoff forget the rear speakers they just confuse the soundstage, just fit components in the doors off an amp and a sub ;)
Even if you fit 5.25" speakers you want wooden adapter rings http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/forums/43/119564 ... r#p1244221
so you might as well go with 6.5" and benefit from the bigger cone area.

Also budget for some sound deadening as it makes a big difference as does decent wiring, have a look at mine for inspiration

Would you just do the doors with the sound deadening?

I did the rear bulkhead and down into where the cubby boxes go, under the rear quarter windows, some on the floor and the roof above my bass port as well as the doors.

Doors are the most important one though, if you're only going to do one thing, do that.

Sorry to jump on this thread but I'm looking into getting some 6.5 for the fronts, and would need some spacer rings , I probably have the right tools for the jobs (dremel and jigsaw) but have never made anything like that before are they easy enough to do ? Does it matter if I cut the spacers out and they aren't perfectly circular??

Again sorry for hijacking thread

Decent wiring, decent head unit, sub in an mr2 made box and some decent front components in standard positions is all you need.your prob want an amp as well to power these.
Its only a small cabin so wont need a lot. Ive experimented with rear speakers,6x9s etc etc and dont need them.
Ive got sony front components powered from head unit, head unit is a entry level jvc, sony sub in an mr2ben box powered by a mutant amp and it sounds fine to me.
