At least I won't need to do it again for a few years though!

Cambelt / oil pump / water pump change - Essex
I had to fit a bottom cam cover on my first MR2 (NA) as whoever did the cambelt for the previous owner forgot to refit it! I only found out when I went to check the timing:(.
You have to take off the crank pulley & engine mount just to do this. A pain but doable.
Not many jobs in the engine bay that are 'nice' to do come to think of it. Fitting a Turbo decat & intercooler. Definitely not fun!

I would actually appreciate coming along as well, be good to meet some Essex owners and learn a thing or two. Gaz (rev1tubby) has met me before and can hopefully confirm that i'm a genuine person I also bought a rad from mr parker.
PM me if this is ok

Your first time is no fun on these, the turbo is worse.
I could give you a page length list of tips.
Yes it doesn't need doing again for ages, by which time you have just about forgotten all you learnt the first time !
The engine side covers are a jigsaw puzzle and that cast iron engine bracket needs to come out early or you break the centre top cover plastic mounting bolt peg off the belt cover if you try and wrench it out. The stock intercooler doesn't need to be removed from the car, you can pull it round at an angle in the engine bay to get at the bracket bolt.
It has to be one of the harder cars to do a belt change on. Depending on a number of factors I would leave the water pump alone and not change it if its been done before.

It's an NA so no intercooler to worry about. He is planning on changing the water pump I believe so any tips welcome.
I've removed both cambelt covers, the engine mount, and the pulley on an NA before. Fiddly but not difficult.
It's more the actual belt fitting that will be new. Seen it done and have a pretty good idea but we'll have 'experts' on the end of the phone if need be.

Never done one on a two. Pacific works is to cheap not to let them do it but watched a garage do a Celica and the guy had a neat trick.
He gained all the access needed and the with a scalpel his mate hand cranked the engine while he cut about 3/4 of the belt off. Then slipped the new one on and just cut the last bit of the old one off.
Looked a little fiddly but he reckoned you didn't have to worry about moving the timing then.
I suppose it's easy if you do enough of them.

Seen that before. Great if you are not replacing bearings and the water pump I presume.
Anyway, we like learning new skills. Welding is next:).

Seems a bit pointless to just change the belt, it comes as a kit with tensioners for a reason.
We're doing the lot inc. water pump, new hydraulic tensioner, crankshaft seal.
We'll need a paint booth after the welding is sorted Stu!

That doesn't count. You have to be a seller to get a rating.romford.dan wrote:I also bought a rad from mr parker.
