Since I do not intend to use the car for track days but only road use, do I need to worry about the stagger. There seem to be quite a few Toyota models with 6.5 J wheels.

I would say that running stagger on is more important on the road than on track.

As an aside, I am wondering what your trying to achieve? It's not as if stock MR2 wheels are difficult or expensive to get hold of.

Yeah the final conclusion I came to was a set of stock 15inch and you can run road legal race rubber on them over here which means they are better than any standard 17inch road tyre anyway. Mine is not a high mileage daily driver so they last at least 5 years plus and the compound remains soft.

Irrespective of stagger, finding OEM Toyota wheels with the right PCD and offsets for a Mk2 is going to be your biggest challenge.

There are quite a few other Toyotas with the same PCD, off set and bore including the Rav4! I am looking for 15 or 16" wheels but in these hard financial times new ones are out. I have been looking in the usual places for pre-owned wheels but it is not that easy to find a set of 4 or 5 where the seller is prepared to post or where the wheeels do not need immediate refurb.
Looking at various web sites regarding tyre fitments/wheel width, 6.5J wheels are good for both 195 and 205 tyres, thus, in my mind preserving the stagger, or am I wrong?

Are you in an area which is currently under lockdown and thereby subject to travel restrictions? I ask because you appear to be only willing to buy from sellers who are prepared to send by courier. Having learned the hard way years ago, there is no way in Hades I would countenance parting with my cash without seeing the wheels in the metal first. Not doing so entails risk. It is difficult to fully evaluate condition from a pic. As an example, just a single buckle in one spot (which might only become evident from a visual inspection/roll test) and you're looking at around £40 to fix it.

In my experience, the majority of s/h wheels will require refurbing. Finding any mint/already refurbed ones is obviously going to severely restrict availability. It will also govern the the market price. To imagine otherwise is wholly unrealistic. I've bought a fair number of sets of s/h wheels. Trust me, you will have to exercise a lot of patience and most likely to be willing to travel some distance to get what you want. How far is entirely up to you. Only once in the 14 years I have owned MR2s have I found a set truly local to me. YMMV.

To do so on a 6.5J wheel you would need to fit the minimum width 185s on the front and the maximum 215s on the rear - https://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/ty ... dvice.html

My first Mk2 turbo had non-staggered (7J x17") wheels when I bought it. Immediately fitted new tyres 215/40/17 front and 235/40/17 rear to replace the cheap and nasty ditchfinders! I then found out that 235mm is wider than the recommended maximum for 7Js.The sidewall 'bulge compared with the fronts was very noticeable. I later upgraded to staggered width wheels together with tyres within the ideal range. The difference in rear end behaviour was marked.

Car manufacturers don't incur additional costs without a reason. Toyota didn't fit a staggered wheel/tyre combo to the Mk2 MR2 for sh1ts and giggles. The 225/50/15 tyre choice in the UK is very restricted.
Nankang Toursport XR-611/Toyo T1Rs or R888R/the ridiculously expensive Pirelli P Zero Assimetrico (£500 a pair!). For that money I can get a full set of 17" Eagle F1 Assymetric 5s and a 4 wheel geo check. I haven't checked to see if any cheap Chinese rubber is available because you certainly don't want those on a MR2!

It gets easier with 16" but as peteV6R5 said the trend is only going one way. Most people opt for 17s as the range of available wheels and tyres is far greater.

my bad on 235s just remembered had 235 on my 1st set of 17x7J

yeah its 7.5s that have max 235/40/17

on the 225 width ----its 225/45/17

Yes, going to view before buying is the best thing to do, but so far the only ones that from the description sound OK are in the far North, like Aberdeen! Travelling from Essex to there just aint worth it. Now if someone were to be selling 15, 16 or 17 ( moved goalpost) wheels in East Anglia I'll be there like a shot. Also several websites both UK and US show 205's as OK for 6.5 rims

Indeed. See the link I posted earlier. I never said otherwise. If you remember, your earlier post referred to preserving the (tyre) stagger. Another option would be 6.5Js plus spacers on the rears and 205 section tyres all round. Not optimal (staggered wheels are preferable) but doable.

Assuming aftermarket wheels rather than OEM Toyota, do you have any preferences?
e.g. 3 spoke/5 spoke/6 spoke/7 spoke/split spoke/colour/etc. etc.
Presumably you have a budget limit in mind. That will obviously dictate what you can get.

The car is a 1991 MK2 Rev1 and is in original condition, I even have a full set of MOT and loads of receipts so the aim was to try to keep to Toyota wheels.

In which case you already have some so why not stick with them?
