Japfest 2015 south/south west convoy

Post by notroubleclubber »

As a topic hasn't been started yet, I will start it.

Who's up for this?

I'm in Swindon. It has been mentioned in south east convoy thread that they may not do the Morrison's meet due to the traffic. Some have early track times booked so don't want to be late.

I will start then we can decide meeting places and times etc....

Not many so far?

Will see about a meet on imoc too. I was going to propose meeting at the lydiard car park just off J16 of the m4. It looks like people are wanting to miss the usual chippenham morrisons meeting place as it gets real busy there and we maybe entering castle combe via the hullavington rd.
Maybe the east convoy can meet here too?

Jamie - if your west bound then the travelodge is actually on the m4 and there isnt a "legal" way of getting back on the a420. You will need to carry on westbound via the m4 and get off at j18 bath and head into casgtle combe that way. To meet with us would mean coming back to Swindon (coming off a j18 and back tracking 2 junctions) or meeting us at J17 (still coming off at j18 and back tracking 1 junction).
However there is a gate for "service" vehicles. If the gate is open (not normally) then you can get on the a420 and meet us at J17 without having to back track down the m4. I doubt it would be open - and it has cameras on it too.

The south east pre-meet is slated for Chieveley services (J13).
I doubt that those with early track time slots will want to stop again though.
The best route in to gate A is from J17 via Stanton St Quintin and Grittleton.

I beg to differ about needing to go all the way to J18. Google maps Streetview.
Eastbound - https://maps.google.com/maps/myplaces?l ... 5,,0,-7.22
Westbound - https://maps.google.com/maps/myplaces?l ... 5,,0,16.82

Furthermore the Travelodge site implies that its guests can lawfully use the access roads on both sides to reach the ordinary road network. Click on the directions & map links here.

The hotel should be able to deal with any potential barrier issues and possible flak arising therefrom.

I don't get the reference to the A420. It goes nowhere near J17 and in any case makes absolutely no sense for reaching gate A if we are giving Morrisons a miss.

sorry i ment a350 not a420.

I didnt realise the lodge had control of the barriers. It used to be police only. Jaime can use the barriers to get back on the A350 and meet us at J17 to go to castle combe as Tony has described via Grittleton etc. I agree this is definetely the better way. There is no badminton horse trials at this time either lol
Good job Tony is thorough!!!!

Ah...

I'm not saying it's 100% definite, merely that their site implies they have a means of assisting their guests. Best to speak to the hotel direct to find out whether access means you can get in that way but not out again! Don't forget this is the UK which is very fond of the daftest arcane rules...

Don't remind me. I left with Woody and we went half way to Bristol because of the diversions.

It didn't help that I missed a crucial junction.
Ended up doing a very roundabout route home via Malmesbury.

Er - http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/forums/47/163192.html

No timings yet but it's a tad shy of an hour to Gate A on a good day. Even with this route
https://www.google.com/maps?saddr=Unkno ... 4&t=m&z=14 it is likely to be more than that on 16th as traffic builds up.

Better to be early as you can always find something to do once at the circuit. Time lost is gone for ever.

Talked to a few of the boys this weekend and myself, Coley, Craigrev3, MrAndy & I think Beanmonkey will be going in the back way again this year off the A46.

We are meeting in the layby just off junction 18 of the M4 (Stroud side) at 6.45, anyone is welcome to join us. It gets us into Combe at around 7.30 which gives enough time for breaky, tea & chatting before the track opens :th:
