Please fix the SUBMIT issue

Post by pbmr2 » 29/11/16 19:07

For a long time it's been an issue with this website and no other, after posting long and detailed posts to the forum it simply fails to post them and they vanish into a digital black hole.

Being a member of over 30 website, this is the only site I've ever had the misfortune to lose posts in this manner.

Regularly get half way through a long post and get distracted with research or posting elsewhere on other sites. Come back and finish off the post, click the button and bingo the post is submitted and posted to the site. However that's not possible on this site. Forget to copy the entire text and it's just a memory

Why oh why is this forum the only place on the internet to just throw away member's posts? What is the cause? Many of the other forums use the phpBB systems without issue, is there not a project to at least fault find the problem?

I know for a fact that people lose the will to repost and just don't bother 2nd time around. Some do repost but often a cut down post due to apathy for repetition. It's enough to make you want to punch the screen and burn the membership card at that point in time.

Please offer some crumb of hope for the future for resolving this highly annoying and soul destroying 'bug'.

Yours, very dejected of Sussex.

Take some comfort that you are not alone.
It's not just very long posts that suffer from this 'feature'.

This one did too, so this is the second attempt.

Fortunately I didn't forget to use the copy text work around... :th:

Can't speak for pbmr2 jimi but for me it's not a timing issue.
My earlier post on this thread took me ~45 seconds to compose.
I copied it to the clipboard the hit Submit button..

Poof! It failed, the text disappeared, and I was left staring at a blank box.
Copied the text back in and hit the Submit button again. Bingo! It worked.

I had exactly the same problem with this one.
This time it bombed twice rather than once.

Otoh other posts I have made today have worked first time.
It seems to be complete pot luck whether a message 'takes' or not.
Like pbmr2 I don't have this issue on any other board/forum.
It's not the issue of the century given the bigger picture of the world atm.
It's still a irritating pain in the butt though.

Konfused of Kent... ;)

Have made a number of longer posts and not have it happen, had it only a couple of times on shorter posts.
Normally I remember to copy the text before posting (button mapped on mouse just for this site :D ) but forgot till about 3 seconds after pressing submit. rushed to select the text and copy but it loaded the full posting window before I could copy.

Lost the love at that point and went for a cupper. Someone didn't get a long detailed post crafted for them.

It doesn't even happen every time, just most times. Have come back to posts that I've missed posting and clicked, maybe 15 mins later and they work. Other times it's just a quick 4-5mins of typing for it to vanish.

Seems to be something to do with the time between loading the page and pressing submit. of course it's an error so this isn't consistent.

Don't normally get it twice in a row like Tony describes.

Unfortunately intermittent glitches are extremely difficult to find, all the post/edit timeouts are set to 0 which basically means they are inactive. I'll look, but doubt I'll find anything.

I have gotten into the habit of copying the text of a message into a notepad (if it's taken me >5 minutes to compose a message) before clicking submit.

Having said that i've never lost a message on mr2oc.co.uk, but I have seen session/cookie timeout swallow posts on other sites/systems in the past.

It is irritating - I'd say 10 minutes session timeout was an acceptable value - if you spend longer than that you should be taking precautions, if you are less than that then you have a right to be a bit narked.

I can't explan what's happening with TLF - are you using mulitple tabs/windows against mr2oc.co.uk at the same time ?

On any forum, I've always written long and detailed posts in notepad and formatted them later if it was needed.

This forum isn't the only place that likes to send data into the nether. Also helps if you're a knob and close the window by accident.

Thanks for the effort.

I'm suprised you haven't seen it happen yourself. Could be my choice of browser? (FF)

It does transend versions of Windows as it's been happening for years, also transends versions of the browser. Don't really use other browsers much unless testing other things, FF could be the root of the issue.

I have noticed this before... the pattern I've spotted is it only happens to me when I'm using the quick reply feature.

I mostly use the quick reply, even for a long post. Not been taking logs of the issue so can't say if it's happened many times with the full reply feture. It has done it to me in full reply though, but can't give a fair assesment of how often as it is rarely used.

I've had an SQL error a few times after leaving a reply for a longer period of time, not sure if that's the same error that the OP has experienced.. Not necessarily a long winded post, just one where I've needed to spend 10 minutes to find a reference or something like that. It's so infrequent that I've never bothered to look for a pattern. Left this one open to see if it does it so I can screenshot...

Time period 22:18 - 22:35.

Needs longer than 17 minutes if it's time based then!

Not had the SQL errors apart from when the site last updated.
