Turbo Engine Swap Consideration

Post by d-peg »

Been reading a couple of threads over the pond on this engine being used

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOYOTA-CALDINA-3S ... 3a5e93d6eb

OK - Nippon Auto Spares is probably not the best place to buy from but is supposed to be quite handy :)

It's a coil on plug engine (like the beams) so no dizzy and is quite handy for doing a proper sized Chargecooler install..

this is the best i have come across so far...

The caldina intake manifolds are sometimes used with the GT4s when they do FMIC conversions AFAIK.

Is there much benefit on using the rest of the engine over the MR2's 3s-gte?

Higher Compression, Stronger Rods, better hp & torque out the box.
You've also got no dizzy to mess around with, I hated my dizzy and plugs, they are a constant pain in the "censored".

The power is also more gradual compared to the older 3SGTEs. I've also been told that you can just up the boost and have 300+hp on the standard engine + bits but I don't know how true this is.

If I was doing a turbo conversion this is the engine I'd use but you know me, I always like to go for the "stupider" option.

Just like the beams is the best 3SGE, this 3SGTE is the best 3SGTE. Has the advantages of both the 2nd gen (torque) and 3rd gen (strenght) all combined into one.

Dan, DO NOT buy from Nippon Auto Spares, they are that same company as MKDL Motors, MrEngine, A1 Jap Spares and the rest of the robbing gits that sell engines, pick up the faulty one give it a clean and sell it on as a refurbed engine.

Myself, Wibble and quite a few others have been caught by them, I cant beleive that e-bay still allows them to trade

Turbo Engine Swap Consideration

I know Nippon are a shocker - mark thorpe's rev 2 engine came from them. Would never consider them carol - EMS imports engines from japan to usa so he could probably organize a container this way

I didn't know that the Caldina had a Gen 4 tubby engine, it looks like a good alternative to the usual Rev 3 upgrade, especially if it can handle more power with less mods :th:

Are you thinking of doing a tubby conversion Dan? I thought a V6 & a V8 project would be enough! :laughing

Edit just found some figures on this:

256 hp @6200 rpm
239 ft·lb @4400 rpm
Rev 3 N/A - RIP :(
Rev 2 Turbo - Sold :(
Rev 1 N/A - Road Legal Track Car :D
Rev 1 V6 - Co-owned side project :D

Turbo Engine Swap Consideration

Not at all Craig, I just thought a stronger alternative to the gen3 (rev3-5) would be welcomed for consideration :D

As far as I have discovered there is no difference between any mr2 turbo engines revision 3-5...

4-cylinders just ain't enough for me :laughing

I think you should feel honoured that the op has basically congratulated you on such a high class build - don't take offence mate, he may not have known who you/the originator was

The internet is made for sharing. That's the whole point of it, forget copyright and privacy open source is the future.

BTW nice find :-)

Turbo Engine Swap Consideration

True, but without seeing threads/pictures like this - many folk would have nothing to aspire to. If those images are indeed of an engine that you built - then congrats, it looks stunning :th:

It also helps us learn about other options available in the seemingly bottomless pit of 'tuning' !
