The MK2 MPG / Fuel Consumption Thread
Seeing as there's been various threads posted here and there regarding the mk2 MPG i thought i'd get this one going where everybody can stick up there MPG's
Rules;
- None of this £25 gets me 100 miles and so on.
- This thread is not for discussion of your poor mpg
- Work it out from a full tank basis from fill to refill, use the amount of fuel added to the tank to calculate your MPG. (generally the light comes on around the 45 litre mark - leaving approx 10l in the tank)
- list any mods (if any)
- list your car revision & engine type.
- nobody's gonna ask you to post proof but there's no point making it up
How to work it out;
From a full tank reset your trip meter to zero. So with a full tank and conservative driving you'll reach your next fill-up. The receipt will will have the amount of fuel added and your trip meter the miles covered. so, for example;
44.8 litres of fuel added at refill
347 miles covered since last fill.
4.54 litres to one gallon
347 / 44.8 x 4.54 = 36.16mpg
Tips to better mpg...
General
- avoid breaking - leave enough gap to coast off throttle (in-gear, clutch engaged) and avoid stopping
- stay below 3500rpm
- feather the throttle
- plan ahead - if you see cars slowing down, slow and leave yourself a gap keep rolling
- good service, fresh plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm and leads, oil, clean air filter
- quality tyres will greatly improve your mpg. Worn tyres or low pressures will reduce your mpg.
Why is my car returning poor mpg...?
First and foremost; driving style! The MR2 is not a car that you'd expect to achieve eco-miles but it does! 45+ is attainable - My Audi A6 diesel couldn't achieve that! Keep below 3500rpm and if a turbo, stay off spool! Give yourself time to slow down without braking so much, using the engine & gears. Keep rolling wherever possible.
Secondly; Service items as mentioned above. Poor spark will give poor fuel burn and you'll want to push it harder to get the same results. replace the ignition components (plugs, dizzy, leads & rotor arm) first and foremost. As the MR2 is quite antiquated in that dept you're only talking £60-80 for those bits. But the dizzy & rotor should be changed every 20k roughly.
Check for fault codes! Here's how to do it!

Oil Service will help the engine run more efficiently and prolong the life of the engine. Running on old oil does it no favours at all.
Ropey tyres with minimal tread will increase your fuel economy!
Sticky calipers will increase your fuel usage! (not to mention being rather dangerous)
A Faulty Cold Start Injector will not help economy one bit!
Appendix A
Before somebody pipes up "why buy an MR2 if you're gonna drive it like and octagenarian" then dont! This thread is not for you . I am not known for my slow driving at all, having attended several Kent Runs, France Trips and leader of the Europe Run. The reasoning is simple. Fuel is bloody expensive and this is here to prove that the MR2, if needed, can be driven economically and how to do it.

Re: The mk2 MPG Thread
Rev3 turbo, lots of mods including lower than standard tyre pressures
My latest with about 70% fast motorway cruise:
307 miles, 54L (included a 7L top up to get me home) = 25.9mpg
That trip was on the way to buy a diesel BMW which should return double that mpg!

Rev1 tubby - 23.8mpg
Rev2 tubby - 21.4mpg
Both Apexi induction, Nur Spec R exhaust, decat, uprated IC. Various boost levels, depending on mood.
The roads used were tight and twisty so no good for economy runs!

Local and commuting. It's driving around Thanet that destroys the average.

Rev1 n/a (rev 5 engine) Induction kit, japspec filter.
Averaging 35.4 mpg for the past year, motorway, A road and a short B road blasts.
Best run 465 miles on one tank, will repeat this on my next trip home for a (hopefully) similar result.

Port N Polish, Turbo gearbox, breathing mods (filter & exhaust), 95% motorways. Verified as part of our "top gear fuel challenge" we did a few years back when Wedgie and myself were against Matt & Lezz driving back from Durham and Bristol respectively.
