Re: Save your Mk2 - my sill restoration experience
Just popped out to the car, really heavy rain tonight, , felt inside the seatbelt area, on all surfaces and its bone dry, however the blob of sealant im pointing to (I picked the surface paint off it so its now white) is wet. This is the innermost skin to which the speakers are attached to. The car was driven home in the dry, so water ingress is occuring somewhere. Its also really mild out and not a hint of condensation when checked..

Lads...having a few beers after a long week, read this thread and pulled the car apart :P
Whats the verdict on the below....what should I treat it with?
Cheers.
Tbar leak here (Passenger side) - so expected some surface rust here.
Took foam out passenger side:
Uh-oh :(
Checked - not too bad seems surface mainly...a bit up the side where you cant see in the photo
Drivers side clean! Could get a proper look or photo but looked OK.

Re: Save your Mk2 - my sill restoration experience
I grabbed some underseal as I heard it was better for what I'm trying to achieve here...any ideas?
Picked up in Halfords earlier..
Done the weekly shop in aldi and spotted a ,woodcare brush set' for €3
The angled brush is ideal for this job and makes it simples .. ..tried the straight brush and it was tough to use in the small space especially with my Mars bar fingers
First Coat dry (Kurust)
Second coat on (Kurust)
Will seal with the waxoyl tomorrow if I've time. Haven't checked the drivers side yet I jammed my hand in and it was all clear but may as well stick the waxoyl in there as well.

Re: Save your Mk2 - my sill restoration experience
My Anniversary model is quite rusted on the rear sills, it's been patched before and most of the rear section is currently made of filler "censored" knows why they'd do that.
Haven't ripped the foam out yet but i will be during the week..
It's gone through to the inner part of the sill too, been quoted about £550 to grind out all the diseased metal and weld in new metal and to repaint the whole sill in carib blue..sound decent enough price?

Re: Save your Mk2 - my sill restoration experience
Rustproofed the sills today - Bilt Hamber Dynamax S50 arrived from cleancar.ie, already treated with Hammerite Kurust last week.
BEFORE:
AFTER (Still wet in Pic!):
Will check the driver side sill when I get a chance and add some for good measure, but the foam was clear on drivers side so it'll keep!

push the seat forward remove the plastic trim under seat belt, where the seatbelt is bolted theres a cavity behind it reach in and grab the foam..stick in a digital camera to take a pic as you cant see whats going on down there!Alex687 wrote:Where abouts is this cavity with the foam in and how do i access it?

Re: Save your Mk2 - my sill restoration experience
Finally got around to checking the drivers side sill...as suspected not much there as the foam came out cleat
Treated the small rust spot with Hammerite Kurust
Bilt Hamber Dynax S50 Cavity Wax to the rescue
Only way to see into the cavity is with a digital camera..looks a mess but thats the way it supposed to!
Panels still out till the fumes go...took a day or 2 when the passenger side was done.
