CarPC Help Please?

Post by Protok »

So today I had a rare free day and I got (forced) to clear up my parents garage out of my "censored".
Whilst clearing up I found a familiar box with all the CarPC bits in it and then remembered that I had started (and nearly finished) building the pc this time last year but then "censored" kind of got mad and I never even finished it.

So specs first;
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-GC330UD
2GB Ram
80GB 2.5" IDE HDD

I know I need;
A DC-DC PSU, which one is recommended?
Wifi Dongle
SatNav Dongle
DAB & Freeview Dongle
USB HUB - can I run 2 of these?

Anything else that I need??
How do I wire up my amplifiers to the PC?
Which is the best front end? I am planning to use a stripped out Windows XP as the OS.
What sort of cooling should I look at?

Anything else at all that I missed?

Cheers as always :th:

So specs first;
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-GC330UD
2GB Ram
80GB 2.5" IDE HDD

I know I need;
A DC-DC PSU, which one is recommended? Id go with this plenty of power
http://linitx.com/product/12004
Wifi Dongle any should do the job ok maybe to keep things tidy
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Nano-Wir ... 3f1a271e3e
SatNav Dongle i swear by the globe sat bu-353
http://linitx.com/product/10823

DAB & Freeview Dongle probably not worth doing as reception will be poor as the cars always moving

USB HUB - can I run 2 of these? yes you can, id find a powered one
http://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages/sho ... 0&format=0 expensive i know or just a normal hub, i find they dont last long in the car though

Anything else that I need?? Have you got a screen? Can be had of ebay for cheep something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-Car-PC-Reve ... 1e7132b66e

How do I wire up my amplifiers to the PC? 3,5mm to phono cable, how many amps are you going to run, the mini itx board will only output stereo probably to you'll need to split it if you have subs, front and rear etc, i use a line driver one input and 3 out, or get a usb sound card that does front rear and sub etc
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-Channel-USB ... 2ec0109ae6
Which is the best front end? I am planning to use a stripped out Windows XP as the OS.
What sort of cooling should I look at? The best front ive used is centrafuse but that is expensive

there are some free ones check

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/ for some idea's

Anything else at all that I missed?

Cheers as always :th:

Well what do you have? What you selling? And how much?
Otherwise I still need all of the above.

The power supply would definitely bring me one step closer, it's the one thing stopping Me finishing it.

Don't think I can mention a price as this would make it a for sale post, I'll bring the bits to JAE if you want to take a look at them

Might be worth swapping out the original spinning platter hard disk drive with a solid state one, especially in a car with a ride like the MR2 :cool1: avoid having moving parts, and potential data loss!!

http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalo ... CFQQ8gIwBA

coming down nicely in price now, and well worth the extra pennies
