2zz Conversion

Post by vinp182 »

Heres a quick write up on the 2zz conversion that I've just carried out.. This is not a definitive guide but it may help others with reference for their conversions
Neither the club or myself can be held responsible for any issues that people may have when carrying out their conversions

Whats Needed (Basic bits)

2zz conversion bundle from either a Corolla T-Sport, Celica 190 or if you are made of money a Lotus
Engine
Gearbox
ECU
Loom
Custom engine mount
Swap Manifold
Roadster 6spd box and gear stick cage

Optional extras

Wiring harness
Custom dipstic
Gearbox mod parts (shifter shaft, reverse blockout)
VVL connector kit
Down pipe
Exhaust
Early JDM ECU (giving best lift)
Knock sensor to match ECU
2zz swap cold air intake kit

Engine mount available from Patrick on here, username Headcase
All swap parts available from Monkey Wrench Racing - http://www.monkeywrenchracing.com/index ... =2a&page=1

Wiring guide - http://www.mr2roc.org/misc/referencelib ... hanges.xls

I found this useful next to my printout of the above wiring guide
Image

I found this video useful for learning how to re-pin an ECU - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFM-6ovP_-k

I bought an accident damaged 2004 Corolla T-sport
An Engine mount from Patrick
A swap manifold from MWR
A JDM Celica ECU from MWR
Knock Sensor from MWR
Maf housing from Elise Parts
Universal Induction Kit from Ebay
I already had a Roadster 6spd box and cage

I decided to make my own VVL harness using the plugs + wiring from the 2zz loom
Image
These are the plugs, I traced the wiring back to the ecu connector and removed as per video above

I then modded a 1zz engine loom as much as possible without being in the car to suit as per the wiring diagram above
Image

After removing whats not needed from the 2zz engine and fitting the new knock sensor, I then fitted the modded engine loom to the engine. Then I swapped the wiring around on the TPS
How it is on a 1zz
Image

How it needs to be for a 2zz (blue wire is swapped with brown)
Image

There is a rubber blank on the metal coolant pipe that needs transfering over to the 2zz. Also mine had EGR so I had to blank off the vac pipe to it as I removed the EGR assembly
Depending on which donor car you have, you may have to swap over an aux pulley from the 1zz after the power steering pump is removed from the 2zz
The injector rail from the 1zz will be needed on the 2zz but keeping the 2zz injectors
I modified the 1zz dipstick tube instead of buying 1.. Take about 10 seconds to bend it to the right shape

Next the box needs modding. I removed the selector shaft from the roadster box and fitted it to the corolla box. Its a fairly simple job for someone capable of taking on this converion
My corolla box was missing 2 bolt holes which I just drilled and tapped myself
Image
You also need to swap over the gearbox mounts, gearbox sensor, gear change cable brackets etc to the corolla box

Its now ready to go in the car. All pipe work I used was original roadster , as were the 3 gearbox mounts, drive shafts, clutch slave cylinder, etc

The engine is now in the car on the 3 gearbox mounts and custom engine mount with all pipework connected back up . I also used the roadster A/C pump with a 2zz aux belt

Swap manifold went on next and I have kept the original 1zz cat and my aftermarket Team Moon back box
Image
I chose this particular manifold as it blanked off the EGR and had the o2 sensor point already in it. The 2zz only uses 2 of the 3 o2 sensors (the right hand manifold and the post cat one) I fitted a spare o2 sensor to blank off the other hole in the new manifold for 2 reasons, 1. I was to tight to buy a bung 2. I now have a spare o2 sensor with me when Im out ;)

Wiring inside the car is fairly straight forward if you follow the diagram
Image
The diagram doesn't show which way round the VVL connections go so it goes like this
C6 = Blue/Yellow wire (-)
C7 = Black wire (+)
C21 = Oil pressure sensor wire

For the air intake I used the 2zz rubber pipe off the throttle body, then my elise parts maf housing with my universal induction kit after that

Once the engine is full of fluids its time to turn the key. The ABS light will be on but once the car is taken for a spin it will go off :th:

Just had a skim read, but looks like a great write-up Vinny! :th:

I suggest this moves to mk3 useful information, which is the staging area for KY2 ;)
