so i think it came out all right. would have been better if i sealed it properly and didnt waste a load of the pu rubber so it was filled to the top.

i think the rubber compound is quite soft. maybe too much so IMHO, its certainly more pliable than the other poly bushes in the car... maybe itll get harder its still a bit tacky to the touch.

maybe adding the colouring agent changed it somehow? maybe mix up a very small amount as a test and see if its different?

Just a little more progress today, I now the proud owner of a mk1.5?with 3 engine mount. Unfortunately between the seam welding, media blasting and powder coating the mount had moved so it didn't line up with the bolt holes so I had to take a grinder and drill to my lovely mounts to get them to fit 😞, but they need to work first look good second.

Image

So there it is all attached and doing its job, there is a little bit of work to do to reinforce it and use that last remaining bolt hole. Next time I get the welder out I will mock it up and attach it.

After this I got a bit anal and sorted the bolts into size order and put them in my new bolt organiser. 😄I'm sad I know but it made me happy.

The main purpose of the weekend was to replace the other halfs car after it was driven into the back off, so she had.

And now has

Now she's happy I can get back to working on my own car, until it breaks down, it is a Impreza after all.

I know it's for safety of the occupants but it's distressing how these more modern 'crumple zones' do actually crumple.!! I suppose it's be repairable if you had the time and inclination.

Not forgetting scobbies are made of cheese-metal. :D

I was very happy with crumple zones the damage doesnt look to bad but once the bumper was off the whole backend was pushed back 20-30cm. That was including the chasiss rail.

Well the Impreza is still making my other half happy and hasn't broken down so this means more time to work on the mk1.

Ive got alot of welding coming up soon with having to build in done support into the rear firewall, make an enclosure for the intake manifold plus strengthen some of the mounts. In order to get some practice in I decided to make a simple battery tray, it's not pretty but it does the job.

My welding is not pretty but I have much more confidence that it will hold together, before any asks the welds you can see are just tacks the welding is underneath.

Time to get refocused on this project

Post by chaos19810 »

So it’s amazing how time flys, it’s been along time since I’ve started this project and if I’m honest I’ve nearly sold it/thought about breaking it many times.

Now life has settled a bit and time and money look like they are going to arrive at the same time. So it’s time to get this project going again and try and get this done so I can start driving the thing.

So with the renewed energy I’ve been down to the workshop and fitted the st205 brakes and worked out how I at going to fit the sw20 rear brakes. It seems that Toyota just kept using the same parts, the Sw20 rear brakes just fit perfectly, all it needs is a spacer (I think 5mm) then I can use the front discs of the Aw11.

The car now looks like a car I have bolted all the panels on and I’ve made a list of what need to be done so over the next few weeks i’ll be boring you all with updates.

Re: Time to get back on this project

Post by chaos19810 »

Starting to see the finishing post of this time build now hopefully by December I can start moving the car around the yard and getting it up to temp, but today’s work comprised of finally fitting the gt4 4 pot front brakes and finalising the intake system.

The brakes needed a little fettling once again, I’ve had to put 4mm of shims to space the caliper so the discs sit in the middle. Unfortunately my 17’s as the calipers, hit the spokes so it looks like I will need 50mm spacers so that it clears them. I want to stick with the very retro large 5 spoke, they seem to suit the car ,so now it looks I’ll be going for a wide body with rivet on arches from woodsport.

As for the air intake I want the snorkel to be functional, so that means I need an in-line filter, I’m trying out one of the canister style one, I will be making a bottom section to the snorkel with fibreglass so other than a drain hole for any rain that gets in all the air will come through the snorkel. I’m hoping that this means it will only get cold air from the outside rather that pulling hot air from inside the engine bay, what difference this will make I don’t know, but I bet the induction sound will be awesome.

Re: Time to get back on this project

So with the prospect of heading to japfest I’ve decided I need to get my self organised and get this car on the road and tested before the show season starts as I would like to enjoy the car this year as it now been of the road for two years. So over the last few weekends I’ve been hitting the workshop and getting things ticked of the list.

First was a way of shutting the engine cover so I went for the aero catch style and with a lot of fiddling and grinder action I got them fitted and they look good.

Image

Image

After this I started looking at how I was going to fit the wheels over the celica front brakes I started with 50mm spacers

Image

Front

Image

Rear

Image

The side

Image

This was a little to wide for me plus after measuring the gap between the wheels spokes and the caliper, it turned out to be 30mm so I went and ordered some 25mm spacers and they fitted perfectly.

Image

Now I had sorted the wheels out, I moved on to the door cards, and after a few hours I had finished what I had started two months ago. I decided to bin all the oem wiring for the electric windows and use a universal kit. This might seem silly but I was removing the standard door cards so I had no where to put the switches so replacing them seemed like a better idea.

Image

Image

So slowly ticking of all these jobs I have been lingering on for months and not really having any focus. Suddenly the car was taking suspend sitting on its own wheels for the first time in over a year, the problem now is there is one major job to do before japfest can anyone guess?

Image

So like everything on this car I will be making this exhaust by myself. So I will be using mild steel not stainless as I don’t think I can weld stainless without a new welder and learning a whole bunch of new skills. The plan is to make it and see how much I like the way it looks and sounds. If It turns out I like it then over the winter I will make it out of stainless.

I want to take the idea of the corvette exhaust below and make it fit the Aw11, I will use a 3 inch down pipe and flexi, which splits into two 2.5 inch loops which meet in the middle to have some stainless 2.5 inch rolled tips. Just a little homage to the original exhaust.

Image

If all goes to plan then by March this car will be moving and I can start thinking about getting a MOT and have a garage look over it and give me a job list of things to improve.

So this is where I am, where is everyone else with their projects?

Good luck. I love the idea of a mk1.5. I got rid of my mk1 when i was younger because i didnt think it was fast enough, but it handled great and just loved the rawness of it. So with a turbo engine they must be brilliant.

My car is currently awaiting an engine refresh and rebuild which is now booked in with a specialist so hopefully i will also be ready for japfest.

I’ve still never been in a mk1.5, that’s moved under its own power so I’m getting more and more excited everytime I work on it as it’s getting closer.

It’s going to be fun to get back into the mr2 fold again starting at japfest then hopefully I can start meeting up with everyone again.

Anyone used Mr2ben fibreglass wing?

Post by chaos19810 »

So I’m back, the mk1.5 project still lives and is getting chipped away at each weekend, this is most definitely a built not brought project.

As I get closer to finishing the project and I am honestly getting closer I’ve realised I need two new wings. The car was an ex race car and there are a few dents and folds I’d like to get rid off before spraying it. So my big question is has anyone used the mr2ben fibreglass wings for the Aw11?

Hopefully you will all get to see this car it’s only been 2 years in the making.
