Mr2-not ready to let it go UPDATE
Hey guys,
I need a little bit of advice. My mk2 Mr2 has done 153,000 miles. Has quite a bit of rust, leaks and isn't the most smoothest ride ever as there is alot of problems due to suspension corriding, a knocking sound and generally wear and tear.
On Saturday myself and a friend drove 60 miles to look at a new car. (bmw 1 series 2005)..
On the way home my mr2 broke down with the alternator belt going. The aa gave us a emergency battery and followed us home where the mr2 is now sitting.
On Sunday I went back to Kent to buy the BMW.. It's a lovely car, decent mpg, looks better than its age and is in lovely condition.
However, I miss driving my mr2.. On Friday I'm looking to get the mr2 alternator belt fixed by a local garage as I have no idea what to do (I haven't looked yet tbh)..
Thing is, I kind of want to sell the bmw already and use the money to fix my mr2... Am I being mad?... I know there is alot wrong with it, but I love it and it has sentimental value to me (my father who passed away also loved the car).
Until recently it hasn't ever let me down. I know it really is in bad shape under the body but it's just a nice car to drive and obviously is a looker (red/chrome wheels)..
The only reason I brought the BMW was because it was economical and slightly cheaper tax..
I would be at a massive loss obviously if I did sell the bmw and it is obviously a silly thing to do especially as I just brought it and there is nothing wrong with it.
I could keep the mr2 and just drive it occasionally but I kind of what to drive it daily.
Sorry for the long essay but any help or advice would be most grateful.

Re: Mr2-not ready to let it go
Take the 2 off the road, fix the rust issues, fix the suspension issues.
Alt belt is really easy to do (saves you some money at garage).
When the 2 is ready sell the BM and retax etc and enjoy driving the 2 again.
If it had that much sentimental attachment, I would SORN it and get it done up.
if you did this you can do it up over months and not have to rush it to get 2 back on the road for work.

^+1 on that^
sorn and store it, work on it when you can start with the alt belt as Pete says its really easy and a good place to start learning.General wear and tear can often be easy to fix with new joints and bushes again easy enough to replace yourself as long as you follow guides and make sure things go back together properly.

Thank you guys. I am going to get the alternator fixed and will look at doing it myself. Regarding the rust, how do I go about fixing that? I'm assuming that is a professional job? There is also the problem is the corrosion and all parts.
I do love the car though.. Also if I want to drive it as a second car? Do I need another insurance specialist?

2nd car = 2nd car tax and 2nd car insurance.
rust depends where it is and how bad to what is required to rectify it.
surface rust, rub down, treat with kurust (or similar) prime and top coat to seal.
rust hole - will need a plate welding, prime and top coat as required.
sills gone, will need full length sills replacing, prime and top coat as required.
all are achievable if you have the tools, time and ability.

Re: Mr2-not ready to let it go
Thank you everyone for the advice. It seems there is no holes to be filled in just bubbles of rust.
The tyres have come off the rims or they seem to have.
There is also has a lot of issues with the suspension and knocking noise so a hell of alot needs to be done. Does anyone here use this is a second car now instead of their mr2?

If you are only 60 miles from Kent give Patrick (headcase) a shout he is in Bexhill and knows everything MR2 . As said unless you have aircon the alternator belt is a 5 minute job.

Re: Mr2-not ready to let it go
Hi.. Yes I know Bexhill, I'm from Peacehaven so about 40 minutes away. I don't have aircon so I will try to fix the alternator belt myself.. I do think I need to look at the tyres before I then go anywhere as they are busted big time. They aren't on the rims properly.
My car has alot of problems.. Does Patrick have a garage or does he work from home?.. I'm off for 2 weeks (teacher) so would be interested in giving him a visit.

Re: Mr2-not ready to let it go
Thank you for the link much appreciated. In regards to the alternator belt. My diy is somewhat limited.. I can do oil changes on the mr2.. Is it really that simple to do an alternator belt change?

Re: Mr2-not ready to let it go
I'm going to take the mr2 to a respected garage which is less than a minute away. Whilst the car is there, the wheels will be sorted out (inside of the alloys have come off the tyres for some reason), the alternator belt and be done and they can have a look at other issues.
I may then drive to Bexhill for Patrick to look at it then.
To be honest if the mr2 is not in a serious way I will sell the Bmw. Although it is a lot nicer place to be, it is not my mr2..

Keep both, mate. I'm on my fourth MR2 but she now stays nice and warm in the garage while I schlep about in a 1.5 diesel Megane and work on the Two when I can.
(And I'm also a teacher...well, OK, Deputy Head nowadays...not the most becoming car a member of SLT can roll up in but I still do as a Friday treat when it's sunny!)
