Replace rear subframe

Post by Spongedave »

I've after some advice, the rear subframe on my roadster has pretty much rusted away so needs replacing.

I have sourced a replacement from a breakers yard but wondered if anyone else had replaced theirs and good give me an outline of the process. I could only find a post relating to the MK2 in search.

Is it as straightforward as getting it on axle stands and unbolting it along with everything attached to it, then reversing the process with the new one. Do i need to provide support for the engine while I'm doing this?

Regards,
Dave

Mine was fitted by Headcase at his garage, there is no extra support needed on the engine but I would have thought this to be hard to carry out with axle stands as some of the bolts will be well and truly stuck. Also recommend replacement bolts for the subframe as the existing ones will be corroded too.

Spongedave, I'm in exactly the same position having just found a rotted rear sub frame during a routine MOT!

How much did you source your replacement for?

I've been told it's a 2 hr job with a ramp, but I don't really know what I'm doing so expect it'll take me a day. Worried that my bolts won't come off too.

Anyone know any recommended MR2 garages that will do this sort of work properly? My own garage quoted around £1k, cheaper if I source it myself. Silly money!

D1 Customs in Loughborough would be my recommendation. He is an MR2 specialist and well worth the travel.
I think the list price for the rear subframe was just over £300 but they can be tricky to get hold of now.
You maybe able to get a used one from Rutland MR2.

I managed to get a second hand one in really good condition for £120 and am in the process of fitting it myself. Old one removed with a lot of work, lots of rusted bolts but they all came off in the end.

Just in the process of treating the new subframe before I put it back on. I’ve just used axle stands to support the rear of the car.

This might be worth a look although it does look like it’s had some rescue work done already.

Mine had a small hole in it so I have had it welded and then sent it away to be galvanised. That way it shouldn't rust for ages :D
