Gear change problems

Post by harri46 »

Hi All.

Just started having problems engaging the gears with my rev1 mk2. Its a manual box and it seems all the gears are affected. Been told by a friend it could be the clutch actuator. Seems to vary at times, sometimes the gear changes gear normally other times its very difficult to engage. Also been told it could be adjusted depending whether it operates by cable or hydraulics.

Be grateful for any info.

Darren

its hydraulic ...master cylinder in the frunk and slave on front of gearbox.

when was last time fluid was changed...bet never.
check the front and rear engine mounts. when they wear and go soggy the engine rocks too much. this restricts the cable for gear linkages and make selection crap.

deff worth changing out and bleeding through new fluids. and changing engine mounts for new or polybush ones.

Ok first thing to check is whether the engagement is fine with the engine off.
I say this as the gear selector cables have bushes in them that can become ovoid. These can be replaced with polybush or bearings.
Also there is a brass cube on the selector lever on the gearbox. This can get worn on 2 sides so turning it 90 Deg can solve this.

If the gears select fine with engine off the try with engine on and pump the clutch a couple of times before trying to engage. If this helps then a fluid change may work.

If the pedal/bite is at the top of the pedal then it is likely the clutch disc itself is too worn.

Other things to look for is the mounting bolts for the slave on the gearbox. These could have stripped.

Thanks for your info.
I didnt mention before but i have tried the gears with the engine off and they change perfectly with no resistance.
I will try pumping the clutch before engaging and as you said, if that works might be able get away with just a fluid change.

Thanks again for all your advice.

A friend helped me do a full gearbox oil change and clutch fluid change on my MR2 some weeks ago, did a great job of smoothing out the gear changes dramatically.

The only issue was that the aluminium drain and filler plugs on the gearbox were on so tight. A combination of using an impact hammer set at a very low torque setting followed by a 1/2" ratchet eventually got them off. It's worth changing both, if it has been a while.

Thanks for all the advice.

Checked in frunk fluid container was empty. Re-filled it and gear changing is working normally once again.
