Help - wheel squeaking when driving

Post by Scott0713 »

Hello,

I believe my rear right wheel is squeaking while driving.
It does not squeak when brakes are applied.
The speed and pitch seem to correspond to the speed of the car.
It is inconsistent, happens on every drive but not all the time.

Many thanks,
Scott

id look to the caliper first probably starting to stick or has no shims in it . iv had wheel bearings go and they didn't squeak . more a throbbing noise. taking the caliper apart and putting it back together is always a good thing cause there will be something wrong with it. stuck sliders and leaking dust seals

Cheers all.

I'll take the wheel off and look at calipers first then take it from there.

I've detected wheel bearing failure pretty early by hearing high pitched rhythmic squeaks at low speed, before it got to thudding sounds.

Stuck caliper could also cause a squeak or squeal, that's true, although is also likely to cause the car to pull to one side or shift under braking.

Thanks Shinny. The car doesn't really pull unless on uneven surface. The steering vibrates and has some play in it at higher speed (around 80). I've owned the car since July last year and just generally accepted this as being an older car!

Vibration at motorway speeds is typically a front wheel needing balancing, although there are other things that give issues on these older cars. The car pulling around only on uneven surfaces (eg. the tramlines in lane one of a motorway) can equally be a wheel alignment issue.

Update:
Got the car up on four post lift, tried to spin all wheels, but front right was not rotating without extra effort.
Turns out one of the pistons was sticking.

Managed to free it, but think it's starting to stick again. Considering either trying to rebuild the caliper myself, or use MR2-ben, send them my old one and receive what I assume is a refurbished one in exchange already rebuilt.

The old brake pads are the originals also (car has only covered 28k miles). So will be replacing pads, new discs etc.

I'd try Bigg Red for a refurb, probably cheaper than MR2-Ben
