Number plate size
I have just imported a Mk1 from NZ. What size number plates can I fit and still be compliant? I have read a number of the older posts about this but I am a bit confused. Apologies if this has been covered, recently, elsewhere,I am still finding my way around the site.

Re: Number plate size
For the front a standard size UK plate should fit. The rear depends on which rear lights you've got

The Regulations make no mention of what lights you have. Nor do they specify the size of the plate.
Look at the wording of the actual legislation to find the right answer.
Size and spacing of characters: special cases
14A.—(1) This regulation applies in relation to any vehicle imported into the United Kingdom which—
(a)does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval; and
(b)is so constructed that the area available for the fixing of the registration plate precludes the display on the
plate of a registration mark in conformity with the requirements of regulation 14.
Note the and: the vehicle must meet both criteria - (a) & (b) above
If so, you can fit plates with smaller characters etc. If not, you can't.
For the full fat details on sizing, see - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2002 ... ion/5/made,
Personally I would go for matching plates front and rear on an import. YMMV.
If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much room!

Re: Number plate size
Tony, I only mentioned the rear lights as the rear lights are different on UK spec mk1b vs US or Japanese cars and require different sized number plates.

Re: Number plate size
Actually that's not quite true, depends on the market and the year what rear lights are fitted. The rear lights on UK 1a/b weren't exclusive to the UKangpozzuto wrote: ↑06/03/20 20:46 Tony, I only mentioned the rear lights as the rear lights are different on UK spec mk1b vs US or Japanese cars and require different sized number plates.
