Ct26 vs ct20b
Hi mr2oc
Hope everyone is doing ok.
I know there are lots of threads on this but I have a specific question I couldn’t find the answer to. My otherwise stock rev3 has a ct26 turbo fitted. I am aiming for 300hp at the fly. If i fit an ebc and turn boost to 1.1bar, will the ct26 meet my goals? I have read the injectors/afm/head gasket hold the rev1/2 back but how would a rev3 with ct26 drive?
Trying to work out if it’s worth spending money to get the ct20b back on there.
I know the ct20b spools quicker, but have read the ct26 is potentially stronger? Would I still get near 300hp with the ct26? I kinda like the kick it gives although I’ve never tried the ct20b.
Thanks
Tom

No
A totally stock CT26 is useless for anything more than 10psi at the redline.
The CT20b has a slightly bigger compressor wheel and flows 20% more air. You can get 19psi at the redline.

I have tried both, as Carl says the ct26 is fine running stranded boost. It is a nice turbo to use on the road.
As soon as you start tuning, turning up the boost or doing track days it runs out of puff.
Its true what everybody says, the ct20b holds full boost all the way to the rev limiter

Ct20b it is. Thanks guys
Looking forward to it
I can imagine 300bhp feels a whole other league faster than 245

Re: Ct26 vs ct20b
Why is there a ct26 on a rev3?
(I have to assume not a hybrid by the fact you didn’t mention it).
If it is a hybrid, then the answers would change.

Re: Ct26 vs ct20b
The turbo failed and previous owner replaced it with a ct26 judging by the receipt, haven’t managed to check yet
The lag certainly feels like a ct26
Very poor not to replace with ct20b imo. Not somthing I would have ever done

To reach that threshold and still maintain reliability you'll need to do a bit more than just turning up the boost and fitting an ebc. A decent free flowing exhaust for starters. Cooling and fuelling need looking at as well. Pay attention to your AFR figures throughout the rev range. Running too lean at that power increase is a good way to grenade your engine.tommy10101 wrote: ↑06/04/20 22:19 I am aiming for 300hp at the fly. Quite, but getting hold of a s/h ct20b is hard as they don't come up for sale very often. There is a sporting chance that the first one you find may need a refurb which will add considerably to the cost. Finding one in good nick requires considerable patience, not to mention a certain amount of luck (right place, right time).tommy10101 wrote: ↑09/04/20 21:24 Very poor not to replace with ct20b imo. It has taken me well over three years.

I will have a 3inch decat downpipe and exhaust from rouge along with the st205 charge cooler. Do you think that will be sufficient?
As long as the stock fuel pump is healthy, should there be any reason for it to run lean? I don’t know much about how a garage would ‘tune’ the car to make sure the afr is correct on boost.

Re: Ct26 vs ct20b
With the stock ECU your tuning is limited to how much boost you can run but more importantly how much boost you can run pretty much depends on your fuel pressure. Assuming your fuel pressure is good and not running a fuel pressure guage would be the leading cause of engine deaths.

Re: Ct26 vs ct20b
Lack of fuel as mentioned above or fuel quality will kill the engine. Both of these factors lead to detonation during high boost sessions. Hope you have a reliable supply of high octane fuel available.

Re: Ct26 vs ct20b
Both will help. I have them on mine (Berk 3" downpipe/Blitz Nur Spec R/ST205.)tommy10101 wrote: ↑09/04/20 23:21 I will have a 3inch decat downpipe and exhaust from rouge along with the st205 charge cooler. Do you think that will be sufficient?
A limiting factor will be the stock ECU because it's not mappable.
You will likely need an aftermarket one if you're shooting for 300fwhp.
Which will then need setting up properly. Finding a good tuner/mapper will be key.
Once you get into modifications a MR2 specialist is essential. Ordinary garages won't have a clue.tommy10101 wrote: ↑09/04/20 23:21 As long as the stock fuel pump is healthy, should there be any reason for it to run lean?
