Rev 5 Respray Help

Post by Ross Rev5 »

Hi – hoping someone could give me some general advice around resprays

I’m nearing the point of handing over my hard earned cash to a bodyshop to carry out a full respray on my currently pink Rev 5. I’ve gathered a number of quotes from companies which range between £2600 - £3500. I’m a bit nervous about handing over this amount of money but I definitely want to invest in my car and turn it into something I can be proud of for many years to come. Do these figures sound about right?

Are there any things I should be considering when making a decision around which bodyshop to use? They range between local independent places – up to a larger more commercial company, all in/around Bristol. I have looked at reviews on the internet and spoken to the companies to get a feel for things, but wondered if there was any advice from people who have been through this process before? Should I be considering companies further afield that specialise in painting MR2’s?

Also on paint colour, I want to keep the colour original and I know mine is Super Red 3E5 (from the handy info section on hear – thanks Jimi), but how can I be sure the bodyshop has/will get this bang on?

Any advice would be much appreciated,

Cheers
Ross

There are many details to consider when getting a full re-spray; workmanship quaility, product selection, prep work, masking, shop equipment, finishing and of course experience.

No one shoe fits all and rest assured with the sort of money you are quoting you will end up with a very nice job. Will it still be nice in 1,2 or 5 years time is the question. No doubt sticking with factory colour it will be spot on. Most companies use water Bourne paint these days so by following the prescribed formula even a 5th grader will get it right. My question to you is factory standards what you want?

You can actually do better than this by selection of better products and application of a more UV protection in top coats while getting a very hard multi layer clear over that. Ask me why I know, my brother is a PPG specialist and we shot my rev 5 car last year. I didn’t stick with the factory paint as we no longer live in the 90’s.

You could easily spend money you may not get back. What is the problem with the current paint? Is there any rust or rot in the car?

Thanks for the advice on this

I do want to keep the colour looking original but kind of assumed that modern paint would be part of the deal and hence would last me a good 10 years or so.

In terms of whether I'll see the money back that I invest in this work - possibly not. I've had the car for nearing on 10 years now and want to hopefully keep hold of it for a good while yet, so have come to terms with this

The car is straight and pretty much rust free (allthough some slight bubbling on the rear of the side skirts).

The paint has oxidised quite badly after some neglect. I've tried cutting it back and polishing and after a LOT of grafting it does look ok, but never lasts for long. Unfortunately I haven't got the time to keep on doing that every month or so).

I would steer clear of larger commercial places as they won't take the care you need.
To do a full paint the car needs stripping down somewhat.
Have you got time, skill and tools to do this yourself? As you can save a lot of cash this way and make sure bits of trim etc aren't damaged/lost

Unfortunately I have neither of those 3 things

I wasn't sure if larger more commercial places would have better aftercare or not. If i encountered problems a few years down the line it might be more straightforward to sort if it came with some kind of warranty or protection sometimes associated with these types of companies

I guess it all depends on the individual company. I'm sure local independents do pride themselves on the level of aftercare they provide so maybe not something to get in the way when making my decision. Obviously getting the job done right first time is the primary objective here.

where you located, there maybe people on here that know someone good in your local area. I have had resprays done in past by 3 local to me (2 now retired, 1 only does panels not full) all been very good. my last full respray in 2009 was £1100 (windows left in) and only started to fade after 10 years in places. Red worse and Blue 2nd worse for fade (cosmos blue) was looking round and was quoted £1500 - £1800 local independants with good reviews. sold car and went m140 instead.

Have you tried a good machine polish? Either yourself or a professional.

Our 96 Rev3, recent polish (following a deeper one 2 years ago), original paint. Had the usual fade but came up very well. Might be worth a look

That's pretty much guaranteed with car this age, if your buying an MK1/2 MR2 expecting to get back what you spend on it your going to be disappointed IMO.
Black is not a colour ! .... Its the absence of colour

With modern paint materials you should not have any noticeable fading of paint. Colours have high UV ratings and the clear costs give excellent protection. I would visit a few shops locally and ask for advice and quotes on work. By shopping around you can compare what is on offer either a buff & polish or full respray.

Agree with the above - Facebook isn't the worst place to check too - if it's a local garage that prides themselves in restoring older cars, you might see examples of their work and ratings/feedback from others. Even better if they've done mr2s before. my mate's a panel beater up here for a top garage, but I'm a bit far away from you!
