Any decent mechanic can install a cam belt by themselves. There are several trick to do including use of bungee cords or paper dog clips. Believe the BGB has some pointers with this if your stuck.
Can verify can gears as mentioned above by pulling valve cover. I found it easy enough to remove the outer cam cover to inspect. Can use a mirror to view notch’s are in correct alignment with TDC or 0deg on crank shaft. Just ensure you are rotating engine clockwise when checking.
