New owner and project intention
Hi all.
I'm new around here. Just picked up my MR2 yesterday. Pleased with my purchase. Feel I lucked out and found a clean one(no rust ). Thought I'd share some initial thoughts and intentions as you'll probably see me asking lots of questions around here.
I love how it drives and looks and it feels so analogue which is what I was looking for(coming from modern fast cars such as an m140i recently). It's very engaging in corners.
Love the t-bar and it doesn't leak so that's a plus.
It's not as quick as I expected but then maybe that's just comparing to what I'm use to(sorry if this offends anyone lol). But I intend to convert it from an N/A to something a bit more special anyway.
One of the indicator bulbs on the instrument cluster doesn't work so I need to look at that.
The clutch seems nackered, at least that's my guess. Slips when coming from high revs down to the next gear and it seems to be slipping when engaging the next gear and attempting to accelerate. Will probably fix that for now whilst I decide what engine to put in it.
Anyway that's about it for my initial thoughts and I'll attach a pic. PS I have no clue what revision it is so maybe someone can tell me(I'm thinking 4 maybe 5?)

@jimi
M4 and M140i. The speed of it doesn't bother me too much though as i will be aiming for 300bhp + once I've sorted all the little bits out and given it some TLC.

Looks good, its a rev 3 going off the yellow indicators.
You really dont need much power in these to have fun but i agree on the mk2 NA its much better after a little power bump. (v6)

Not Plan B again!! Why don't we just go with plan B in the first place?

Re: New owner and project intention
That is a very nice looking SW20. 1998 was the second last model year with low production numbers making this car a rare beast. I have never seen one in person. Last model year for North America was 1993.
If not professionally done by a specialty shop ($$$$), IMHO, swapping engines cheapens the car. The stock engine will easily make 300 bhp with the right mods. Home garage engine swaps are time and money pits, and most look like "censored" when completed.
Keep your stock engine and properly tune it. With the extra money you will save, spend that on other things you need to repair/restore.

Re: New owner and project intention
I use to have an identical one to that except it was a JDM auto. Definitely a rare rev 4 and probably late 97 vintage. Not sure where others get a 300whp possibility as it’s only stock 185hp at crank if similar to 3sge. Pics of engine bay and interior would help with advice.
Different engine would certainly make it shine but keep in mind you will need a boat load of parts to pull off including engine, trans, axles ECU , etc. Mods will decrease value but that’s just the way it is.
