Brake caliper painting

Post by mark1701 »

Hi All,
Looking for a little help and advice please.
I am stripping and rebuilding the brake calipers on my Red, and whilst doing so decided to go all boy racer and paint the calipers.
I have heard that the high temperature caliper paint is a little bit of a con, and decided just to use Hammerite but have heard this may fade over time, but research shows a few in favour of Rustoleum, has anyone any experience of this and can help in any way please?.

Never painted calipers before, but good luck with your project!

I have used "proper" Caliper paint, also used smooth hammerite and finally also used heat resistant paint.

Caliper paint tends to be tacky for ages but finally cures to be a longish lasting cover.

Hammerite covers well, cures quickly but does fade over time then starts to flake.

Heat resistant paint worked pretty good.

now if I was rebuilding capliers and leaving for a week before fitting I would use the Caliper paint every time.
if its a quick on the car clean up its a toss up between the other 2.
Hope that helps

The problem with caliper paint is that it is really thin. So you need lots of thin coats. I did mine a couple of years ago and its started to fade and show rust. But I am picking my spare set of calipers up from the powder coaters today. I would recommend having them powder coated. Then rebuild them. I did a short thread on stripping a full set of Mk2 brakes. Just been waiting to get them coated so I can do the rebuild. I’ll show you the finish later.

Here my calipers back from powder coating. Will rebuild then this week sometime and finish my other thread off. But at least you can see the finish and it only cost me £50 to get them cleaned, blasted and coated. A tin of paint is about £20 nowadays. Then all the prep work etc.
